The Opera VPN app lets you set up a virtual private network in a few moments to surf the web anonymously.
To surf the Web in complete anonymity regardless of your browser, the most effective solution is to set up a virtual private network (VPN in English or VPN in French). The offers available are unfortunately often paying and complex to implement. Good news, the designers of the Opera browser offer a VPN for Android that is free and easy to use. Here’s how to implement it.
1 – Download and launch Opera VPN
Use the Google app store or this download link to install Opera VPN. When it is launched, the app displays a few explanatory screens and asks for your authorization to configure a VPN connection. Tap on OK to confirm. Then press the button Connect to activate VPN.
A small padlock is displayed at the top of the screen. By pressing the button composed of three horizontal bars, located at the top left of the screen, you access the main menu which has a switch to deactivate the VPN when you do not need it.
2 – Change country
Opera VPN allows you to simulate a connection from several different countries. This can be useful for example with YouTube which blocks certain videos depending on the country you are in (test with this link from the American show Saturday Night Live). To change the country, tap the drop icon below Opera VPN, then tap Change Geographic Zone. Then select the country that suits you (the closest region theoretically offers the best speed).
3 – Activate the function against tracking
The app has a guardian (Guardian in English) to protect you against advertising cookies (trackers), which try to find out what you are doing on the Internet. To activate it, tap on the eye icon below Opera VPN, then on the button Activate Guardian.
4 – Test the security of your Wi-Fi network
If you want to know how much protection Opera VPN provides, tap the Wi-Fi icon located under Opera VPN. Then tap on the button Test WiFi security.
The app will perform a series of tests and display two security scores, one without Opera VPN and the other with the VPN enabled.
