The new all-electric Hummer may be following in the footsteps of its distant ancestor, the Humvee. General Motors and the United States Department of Defense are in talks about this.
Hummer owes its existence to the Humvee, a military off-roader that in turn continued what started with the Willys Jeep. The all-electric GMC Hummer is thus inextricably linked to the US military in its origin and that connection is now being tightened again. GM and Defense explore what is possible to come up with a military deployable Hummer again.
The American Medium CNBC reported that the talks are at an advanced stage. There is a somewhat disappointing rumor about the new ‘Humvee’, for those who hope that the military version again resembles its ancestor as closely as the Hummer intended for civilians. The US Department of Defense is said to be mainly interested in the base of the Hummer and, together with GM, wants to build a new coach adapted to military requirements. So it remains to be seen whether the GMC Hummer also serves as an example for the vehicle that is provisionally referred to as ‘eLRV’, as far as its appearance is concerned.
The first prototypes should be built next year, so we may already get to see some of the eLRV. Whatever it becomes, the US military’s desire to move its troops more electrically is, of course, special. In the countries where the Americans were active in large numbers with Humvees, the charging stations are not exactly suffocating. The switch to electric is nicely in line with President Joe Biden’s goal. The 78-year-old Democrat wants to make the government’s vehicle fleet fully electric.
