Hyundai Mobion: Ioniq 5 that can drive sideways [VIDEO]

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 will receive a facelift in the foreseeable future. The Ioniq 5 with the different front and rear that you see in these photos is not the updated Ioniq 5. Meet the Mobion, a creation of Hyundai Mobis that has a packed bag of tricks.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 has been with us since the beginning of 2021 and that means that the Koreans have been thinking long and hard about a facelifted version. Hyundai is already extensively testing the updated Ioniq 5. During the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, an Ioniq 5 with a strikingly modified new front and rear is in the spotlight. Do you think the car looks a bit awkward? Do not fear. It is not the updated Hyundai Ioniq 5, but a demonstration vehicle from Hyundai Mobis.

Hyundai Mobis – a subsidiary of Hyundai that develops and supplies various components to Hyundai and Kia – has tackled an Ioniq 5 in a special way. The result is called Mobion and differs from the regular Hyundai Ioniq 5 in more than just appearance. The Mobion is equipped with what Hyundai Mobis calls its e-Corner System. The Mobion has four individually rotating wheels, each with an integrated electric motor. They can rotate up to an angle of up to 90 degrees. The suspension is also controlled per wheel. The result is a Hyundai Ioniq 5 that can rotate around its own axis, but can also drive diagonally and sideways as if it were a crab. An extensive set of cameras and sensors must ensure that operations can take place safely. Through what Mobis the Ground Projectionfunction, the Mobion indicates its direction of travel by projecting where it is going on the ground.

Hyundai Mobis immediately releases a video into the world in which the Mobion and dance lady Kirsten Dodgen show their striking movements. The technology that Hyundai Mobis has put into the Mobion is ready for mass production, according to Lee Seung-Hwan – Head of Advanced Engineering at Hyundai Mobis. Will that actually happen? The Koreans say nothing about that.
