The tightened advice on working from home in the fight against the coronavirus has a direct effect on what happens on the road. Monday morning there was significantly less delay than a week earlier.
The morning rush hour was relatively quiet on Monday morning. Around 8 a.m., when the road is usually busiest, there was 93 kilometers of traffic jams. By way of comparison, last Monday there was about 250 kilometers of traffic jam at its peak. “It is really a lot quieter than before,” said a spokesman for the ANWB.
Since Friday, people have again been advised to work from home as much as possible to prevent the spread of the corona virus. Before that, the advice was to work from home half of the week. Around 08:45 there was about 10 kilometers of traffic jam. “And these were the result of an accident and road works,” said the ANWB spokesperson. “Last week there was still about 100 kilometers of traffic jams around this time.”
Although it was as if the traffic on the road was back to normal in October, it was still not too bad compared to 2019. Traffic congestion (kilometers and minutes of delay per traffic jam) increased by 32 percent in October compared to September. Compared to the same month in 2019, however, traffic congestion was still more than 40 percent lower.
