Have the mails sent to your provider mail also arrive at Gmail. Then you always have a backup of your mail.
Background information
Gmail is a free email service that allows you to send and receive messages. Learn how to create a new email address and manage your mailbox in the “Gmail: The Basics” article.
Many people also have an email account with their ISP. They receive that e-mail address when they take out an internet subscription. For example, a so-called provider address ends with ‘@upcmail.nl’ or ‘@tele2.nl’. Within Gmail, you can import your ISP’s email account. All provider emails will therefore appear in the Gmail mailbox.
Step 1: log in
First sign in to Gmail:
- surf to www.gmail.com
- If the Gmail mailbox doesn’t appear automatically, type your Gmail or Google account email address and password.
- click on login.
Step 2: Open Settings
In Gmail’s settings, you can add your ISP’s email account:
- Click on the ‘Settings’ icon at the top right. That’s a gear icon .
- click on Institutions.
- Click on the tab Accounts and Import.
Step 3: Add Email Account
Many ISPs allow you to retrieve e-mails using two different protocols, namely POP3 and IMAP. You can read about the differences in the article ‘Moving from POP3 to IMAP’. Gmail can only fetch provider mail using the POP3 protocol.
- Click on ‘View email from other accounts’ on Add an email account.
- Enter the email address of your ISP.
- click on Next one.
- click on Import email from my other account (POP3).
- click on Next one.
Step 4: Email Settings
It is important that you enter the correct email account settings. You received all the data that Gmail asks for when you took out your internet subscription. If you can’t find the data anymore, please contact your internet service provider.
- Check if the entered username is correct. Often the username is the same as the email address.
- Enter the correct password.
- Enter the POP3 server. If this field is already filled in, verify that the POP3 server is correct.
- Enter the value ‘110’ or ‘995’ behind ‘Port’. Port 995 is used for a secure connection.
- Tick any additional options:
- Decide whether you want to leave a copy of the retrieved message on your ISP’s server. This is especially useful if you also want to read provider mail outside of Gmail.
- You can also use a secure connection to retrieve e-mail messages. For your safety, this is a wise thing to do. Keep in mind that not all email accounts support this feature.
- You can also indicate whether you want to label your provider mail. The messages are then stored in a separate folder within Gmail. If you do not check this option, all messages will appear in your normal mailbox.
- Finally, you can archive your incoming messages.
- click on Add Account.
Step 5: Send Emails
From Gmail, you can send messages using your ISP’s email address. Handy, for example, if you want to mail abroad and want to show your provider address as the sender.
- Indicate with ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ whether you want to make use of this. We choose Yes. If you chose No, you can skip the instructions below.
- click on Next step.

- click on Next step.
- Your ISP uses an SMTP server to send emails. Verify that the entered SMTP server and port are correct. You can request this information from your internet provider.
