Having your own child is not always easy. Couples often want ways and means to increase their own fertility. The question may arise as to whether this is also possible with home remedies and what they are.

You and your partner may have reached the point where you want to start planning a family. Maybe it doesn’t work right away or you just want to create the optimal conditions from the start and increase your fertility.

But can certain home remedies or foods really increase fertility? We want to give you an overview and provide answers.

What does your own fertility depend on?

First of all, you should be aware that the probability of getting pregnant at all is not that high. There are only about five to six fertile days in the cycle when the optimal case must occur, in which a sperm finds its way into the egg cell and then fertilizes it. On average, it takes four months for a couple planning to conceive to conceive.

Both physical and psychological aspects can play a significant role in the issue of fertility. If you want to increase your own fertility, you should pay attention to the basic requirements. Most points apply to both partners.

Physical (i.e. related to the body) aspects:

  • body weight – your own body weight in particular can quickly affect fertility. Both too low and too high body weight can lead to unwanted difficulties. Severely underweight women run the risk of not having their period and therefore not ovulating. Severe obesity often also has an impact and poses the problem that the cycle can fluctuate.
  • age – In the case of couples who are advanced in age, there is, of course, nothing against pregnancy. However, age does play a role, especially for women. After around the age of 30, fertility tends to decline, meaning it may just take longer to get pregnant.

Mental (i.e. mental state) aspects:

  • stress, anxiety and lack of sleep – all of these factors can disrupt hormonal balance and impair fertility. Adrenaline, for example, is a stress hormone that can impair the maturation of the egg cell. This is also confirmed by a study from 2015.

Increasing your own fertility – what do you have to consider?

You should look at your own physical and mental state and, where applicable, try to change what needs to be changed. In addition to these points, there are also other factors that increase or decrease your own fertility.

Sports can, for example, increase your own fertility. Not only can you achieve a healthy body condition and weight, but sport also has a positive effect on the metabolism and hormone balance. This is not about going to the gym six times a week, movement and exercises with your own body weight at home are often enough.

alcohol and cigarettes – For many, it is hardly surprising that these two luxury foods are the culprits in the unfulfilled desire to have children. Heavy alcohol consumption can disrupt hormonal balance, so you should refrain from trying to increase your fertility. Cigarettes play an even bigger role and not using them offers several advantages. Smoking in women negatively affects ovarian function and impairs egg maturation, both of which are essential components of a planned pregnancy. In addition, you should give up smoking anyway, at the latest when you are pregnant, because it harms the child and increases the risk of a premature birth.

medication – Anyone who (must) take medication regularly should consult their doctor to clarify their influence on fertility and whether there are other alternatives.

Last but not least: partnership and sex – Support in your own partnership and mutual consideration and understanding are also important, otherwise frustration and thus stress arise. Sexual intercourse should not only be a means to an end. Those who have fun and enjoy sex take the pressure off and release endorphins. Infrequent intercourse can be just as detrimental as too frequent.

Foods That Increase Fertility – Do They Really Exist?

garlic, lemons, chaste tree, flaxseed oil or rosemary are among the foods that are said to increase fertility. However, there are no studies showing that this is the case. However, we explain here what is known and which diet, according to a study, has a positive effect, at least with “in vitro fertilization” (IVF for short, i.e. fertilization in the test tube).

The right composition of food, a balanced nutrition and a closer look at the nutrients are worthwhile when asking how you can increase your own fertility. According to studies, there are no specific foods that have a specific effect on increasing fertility. But there are definitely nutrients that do that and ultimately also foods that should not be missing from your own diet.

There are some nutrients that play a key role in trying to have children. We took a closer look at these for you. Of course, there are also others, such as vitamin A, D and omega-3 fatty acids, so a conversation with a nutrition expert or the gynecologist can always be worthwhile. But now to the most important nutrients:

  • folic acid– You may have heard this before in relation to the topic of child planning. Folic acid is important because it promotes cell division and tissue growth. Since the folic acid level only rises slowly, the intake of this vitamin is often started at an early age. You can find folic acid in green vegetables such as broccoli or chickpeas.
  • calcium – Here it is important to ensure that both partners are admitted. In men, calcium definitely improves sperm quality, in women it can promote ovulation. Calcium is mainly found in dairy products such as yoghurt or quark.
  • vitamin E – Vitamin E is found in egg yolk or, for example, sunflower oil. With an increased supply, it can help in the female body with the implantation of the egg cell in the uterus.
  • Vitamins B12 and B6 – Here we have something for both partners again. Vitamin B12 helps process folic acid. It is also important during pregnancy at the latest, because the baby needs it for the formation of the nervous system and brain. It can be found in potatoes or broccoli. Vitamin B6 supports the metabolism of amino acids and also contributes to the formation of testosterone in men. You can find it mainly in cheese, meat or fish.

The Mediterranean Diet – is this the key?

A study on the Mediterranean diet looked at research on the in vitro fertilization method. This is an artificial insemination method in which the egg cell is fertilized with the sperm beforehand. This works very well in modern medicine. However, what is often problematic is the implantation of this fertilized egg cell in the uterus. The study looked at this process in relation to women’s eating habits.

Significantly more women who were high on this Mediterranean diet had more successful implantation than women who were less on this diet.

So it might be worth trying to add more Mediterranean diet dishes to your menu.

The results of a study were published in the specialist journal “Epidemiology” which showed that the consumption of carbonated, heavily sugared sof drinks and in particular energy drinks can have a significant impact on fertility in women and men. Even one soft drink a day is said to reduce fertility.
