Addiction to social media is a big problem. Instagram hopes to put a stop to it with a new ‘Take a Break’ feature.
Spend hours scrolling through your feed? Time for a break
Adam Mosseric, the CEO of Instagram, announced a new feature to combat social media addiction via an online video. The feature is called ‘Take a Break’ and is currently being tested for iOS. Take a Break will encourage Instagram users to take a break after a certain amount of time. Instagram says this is very important, because many users sometimes scroll through their feed for a very long time.
In the video, Mosseri explains that the feature is an “opt-in control, which allows users to receive pause reminders in the app after a length of time of their choosing.” According to Mosseri, Instagram has worked closely with external experts to make Take a Break as functional as possible.
Take a few deep breaths
The new Instagram feature comes in the form of a pop-up. This one asks you for – the name says it all – a short break to take. The function gives a number of suggestions to fill your break with. You can take a few deep breaths, write down your thoughts, listen to your favorite song or cross something off your to-do list. Or you can just do what you like, of course.
Instagram hopes to make the feature available to the general public in December. Until then, the ‘Take a Break’ feature is in the testing phase. Would you use the feature? Or do you think it’s nonsense and do you just want to decide for yourself how long you use the app? Be sure to let us know in the comments.
