iOS 11.4 tip: This is how you sync messages with your iCloud account

Since iOS 11.4, you can sync everything in the Messages app with iCloud. Before that happens, you have to turn it on first. In this tip, we’ll show you how.

Sync messages in iCloud

Where your text messages and iMessages were previously only stored on your iPhone, you can now finally store them in the cloud. That means you won’t lose them when you buy a new iPhone, and you can view them on your iPad too. The feature has been announced several times by Apple, but each time pulled out at the last minute.

Before you sync messages with iCloud, you need to turn the setting on. To do this, follow the step-by-step plan below.

  1. Open the Settings app;
  2. Tap your name at the top of the list and go to ‘iCloud’;
  3. Turn on the slider behind ‘Messages’.

Good to know is that photos and other attachments that you receive via iMessage are stored in the cloud. This way you save some storage space on your iPhone itself. Messages that you send via iMessage also remain encrypted, just as before.

The iMessage bug that changed the order of your messages has now also been fixed. If you open the Messages app on your iPhone or iPad, all your messages are simply in chronological order.
