iOS 11 date bug crashes iPhones and iPads: Apple releases fix

A strange bug in iOS 11.1.2 causes iPhones and iPads to crash after 12:15 a.m. on December 2nd. Apple will release update with fix soon.

Update (9:23 AM): Apple has released iOS 11.2. It should solve the date problem. The update can be installed via the Settings app.

iOS 11 date bug

Multiple users are reporting problems with their iOS devices on websites like Twitter and Reddit. The bug seems to be related to notifications from apps that send notifications daily or repeatedly. One of the affected apps is Headspace, which sends users a daily reminder to meditate.

The crash appears to be caused by notifications sent at certain times. This includes local notifications, which come directly from the iPhone or iPad. So they do not come from a separate server. The bug has been active from tonight and it seems quite likely that many people will affect it.

If the bug takes effect, the iPhone or iPad will crash. Users will then see a spinning wheel on a black screen. The start screen with the app icons is reloaded. The device will then be unusable for a short time, after which you have to re-enter the access code and you can continue.

Opinion: iOS 11 is still not where it needs to be due to problems

You can do this

The best solution is to download iOS 11.2. Apple suddenly released the update on Saturday, after many people online complained about the bug. iOS 11.2 can be downloaded via ‘Settings> General> Software update’. We recommend doing this as soon as possible.

If you still have the bug while updating, try turning off the background refresh function in the apps that are causing problems. This can be done via the Settings by manually tapping the apps.
