From now on it is possible to choose your default Mail app in iOS 14. Do you have Gmail, for example? Then Gmail opens by default instead of the Mail app when you send an email. That is how it works.
Tip: Set default Mail app in iOS 14
iOS 14 is all about more freedom of choice for users and developers. From the latest iOS version, it is possible to choose which browser automatically opens when you tap a link, or which Mail app opens when you want to send an email.
For a long time it was a thorn in the side for Apple users: not being able to choose which apps open by default. That is now a thing of the past, because from iOS 14 it is possible to set your default apps yourself. For example, choose Chrome as your default browser and Gmail as your default Mail app. That is very easy.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone;
- Go to the desired default Mail app, such as Gmail or Outlook;
- Tap ‘Default Mail app’ and choose your favorite app.
Don’t see the option ‘Default Mail app’ yet? Check the App Store to see if you can update the app. If that does not work, then there is no other option than to have a little more patience. The feature is currently rolling out, so the update for your favorite Mail app may be delayed.
If you want to change the default Mail app at a later time, you can simply do so in your Settings app via ‘Mail’. Please note, because after an app update, the default Mail app may be restored. So always check after an update whether the default Mail app is still set properly.
More about iOS 14
Likewise, you can set a default browser on your iPhone, and you can even set a different default search engine. With iOS 14, Apple makes the system a lot less closed than before. After multiple lawsuits and complaints from major developers, Apple now seems to be compromising.
