iOS 15: these are the functions that are (secretly) on and you should turn off immediately

Already have iOS 15? Good! Yet there are several features in iOS 15 that you should actually turn off right away. Explains why and which parts these are exactly iPhoned you!

iOS 15 features: you should disable these 6 options

There are several new features in iOS 15 that are nice or useful. Consider, for example, SharePlay, which allows you to listen to music together via FaceTiime, among other things.

There are also new iOS 15 features (and some older options) that you should really turn off right away. For example, consider the option that apps can track you or upload photos to iCloud when you don’t have a WiFi connection. These kinds of things demand a lot from your iPhone battery and sometimes also take a big bite out of your mobile data subscription. Besides, apps don’t always have to know everything about it, right?

iOS 15

We’ve put together the most important iOS 15 features that you should disable for you. Walk through it, check the settings on your own iPhone and get started!

1. Turn off tracking requests: get rid of it!

You’ve probably noticed that every new app in iOS 15 asks you to track your activities. Very occasionally you want that, but in most cases you don’t need it at all. There is a setting for this, but it is on by default (obviously). Therefore turn the function off immediately. You do that in the following way.

Open the ‘Settings’ and scroll down. Tap ‘Privacy>Tracking’ and disable the ‘Allow tracking requests from apps’ option. You will then be asked whether apps (that you have ever given permission for) are allowed to continue tracking. Then choose ‘Ask apps to stop tracking’. Below that you can immediately see which apps it all is, so that you can always adjust the tracking entirely to your liking if you don’t want to turn everything off.

2. Check your location facilities: ‘Always’ is (almost) never necessary

Some apps require the app to know your location, such as the popular Pokemon Go game. Google Maps and Apple Maps also regularly need the information from your GPS. It is still not necessary to always give the apps access to your location. Therefore, check your location services and check whether you have the option set to ‘Always’ somewhere. That is almost never necessary.

Open ‘Settings’ and tap ‘Privacy>Location Services’. Go through the list of apps and check the app where the option is set to ‘Always’. Then set it to ‘When using app’ or to ‘Never’.

Extra tip: also check the ‘System’ option at the bottom of the list. Here you can also turn off some things. For example, don’t you use HomeKit? Then turn this option off. Go through the list and turn off the options you never use anyway.

3. Disable analytics and improvements

You have the option to help Apple improve its products and services. Your iPhone does this by automatically forwarding data. Actually, that is not necessary at all and it is better to turn off this function.

Open ‘Settings>Privacy’. Scroll down and tap “Analysis & Improvements.” Turn off your ‘Share iPhone and Watch analysis’ function. When you have connected an Apple Watch, you will also receive a message that data collection is also disabled. Tap ‘OK’ and all options will be disabled.

4. Mobile network backup: no need to stay on

Making a backup (or backup) is of course very important. Your iPhone automatically backs up your apps and data to iCloud. With recent iPhones, the option is set by default in such a way that a backup can also be made via the mobile network. This can sometimes turn out wrong, because you then have the chance that you will quickly go over your mobile data subscription. It is therefore best to disable this option as well.

Go to ‘Settings’ and tap your name. Tap “iCloud>iCloud Backup” and turn off the “Mobile Network Backup” option on the next page. From now on, your iPhone will only make a backup if the phone has a Wi-Fi connection (and is connected to the mains).

5. Immediately turn off: Send photos to iCloud via cellular data

When you take a photo, your phone will automatically send it to your iCloud. Even if you only have a mobile data connection. These photo files are quite large and require a lot of data to transfer. If you take a lot of photos outdoors and don’t have a hefty data plan, this is one of the iOS 15 features you should turn off right away.

Go to ‘Settings’ and scroll down. Tap Photos>Mobile Data. Turn off the ‘Mobile data’ option. Shared Photos and iCloud Photos will then only update when your iPhone is connected to a Wi-Fi connection.

6. Preload in Safari: Not Necessary

When a lot of mobile surfing on your iPhone, there is another option that you can dive into. After a search, Safari will automatically preload the best result, even if you haven’t clicked on the website yet. Does that happen to be a website with a lot of photos that you quickly go through your mobile data limit. Therefore, immediately disable this option.

Open ‘Settings’, scroll down and tap ‘Safari’. Then turn off the slider at ‘Preload best result’.
