One of the new features in iOS 15 is Private Relay. With this you hide your IP address and you can surf the internet anonymously. You do have to turn on Private Relay. We show how it works.
This is how you turn on Private Relay
Do you have a paid iCloud subscription? Then you probably noticed that the service has been renamed iCloud Plus. Apple is putting even more emphasis on Privacy. One of the most important new features is Private Relay. This hides your IP address (the ‘home address’ of your internet connection) and surfing behavior in Safari. That way no one, not even Apple, can see which websites you visit.
Note: Unfortunately, if you are using the free iCloud version with 5GB of storage, you cannot activate Private Transfer. Do you have a paid plan with 50GB, 200GB or 2TB storage space? Then turning on Private Relay is very easy if you follow the step-by-step plan below.
- Go to Settings;
- Tap your name at the top of the screen;
- Choose ‘iCloud’;
- Go to ‘Private Transfer (Beta)’;
- Tap the slider to activate Private Transfer.
Private retransmission is often compared to a VPN (Virtual Private Network). That is only partly right. A VPN anonymizes all your internet traffic. Private Relay doesn’t do that. It only works if you’re using Apple’s own Safari. When you browse the web in another browser, your activity is just visible. In addition, many people use a VPN to change their geographic location. For example, they gain access to the wider range of Netflix in the United States. That is also not possible with Private Relay.
The feature is also still in beta, so you may run into issues. Of course you can also turn off Private Transfer if desired.
