iOS 16.7.1 is out: for everyone who does not want or cannot update to iOS 17

Don’t want (or can’t) update to iOS 17? That is not necessary, but Apple has the update to iOS 16.7.1 ready for your iPhone and iPad.

iOS 16.7.1: for anyone without iOS 17

Apple released iOS 17 in September this year. But unfortunately, not every iPhone can install the update. The new software features of iOS 17 are available as a free update for iPhone Xs and newer. So do you have an iPhone 8 or iPhone X? Then you cannot upgrade iOS 16 to the new version.

The iPhone 8 must remain on iOS 16 and will not receive the update to iOS 17.

It is not mandatory to install iOS 17, even if your iPhone (or iPad) is supported. You can then continue to use iOS 16 for a while. Because Apple is still releasing important updates for this version of iOS.

Apple has now released a new update to iOS 16. There are no new features in iOS 16.7.1, so you really have to use iOS 17 for that. The update is important, because Apple will (probably) fix a vulnerability in the kernel. The kernel is the central part of the operating system and therefore quite important. This error was also fixed in iOS 17 a week earlier with the update to iOS 17.0.3.

Just install

You will automatically receive a message that an update is ready for your iPhone. But don’t you want to wait? Then you manually check for the update in the following way.

  • Tap ‘Settings’;
  • Go to ‘General’;
  • Tap ‘Software Update’ and choose iOS 16.7.1.
