iOS 16 for iPhone: Here are our expectations for WWDC 2022

In a month’s time it will already be that time: then the WWDC 2022 will start Worldwide Developers Conference Apple is likely to announce iOS 16, among other things. These are our expectations of iOS 16 for the iPhone.

Apple announces new software at WWDC (June 6, 2022)

Apple sent out the invitations for WWDC 2022 a while back. So we already knew that this annual app developers conference will take place between June 6 and 10. All major announcements are expected to take place in the evening on the first day.

During this keynote at WWDC, we’re likely to see iOS 16, macOS 14, watchOS 9, and iPadOS 16. We also have slight hopes that a new MacBook Air 2022 will see the light of day.

In this article we list our iOS 16 expectations for the iPhone. We base our wishes on various rumors and leaked concept images.

These are the expectations for the design of iOS 16

We would prefer to see a new design of the app icons this time. Several leaked drafts show deeper shadows, larger fonts and slightly more texture. However, these are minor differences.

The icons have the same design as macOS. That’s not surprising, because Apple likes uniformity. We also see a new background in the leaked concepts, with both pink pastel colors and deep blue-purple hues.

We think that the big changes of iOS 16 for the iPhone will mainly be in the widgets. Apple is also rumored to be using a different font on the Lock screen. This should make the date and time easier to read.

Furthermore, we regularly hear rumors about a special widget. This ‘large’ interactive widget is filled with smaller widgets, such as your calendar and the weather of the day. Also ‘Quick Actions’ buttons (which we also saw in the Control Center with iOS 15) can be added in this interactive widget.

Other (possible) additions to iOS 16

We will probably also see changes in the notifications. There have been various rumors for a while that Apple is working on a new variant of Focus. This should make the notifications from messages and other apps less distracting.

In addition, there is the hope of an ‘always on’ display. Apple has already applied this to the latest Apple Watch Series 7. Hopefully with iOS 16 we will now see this also on iPhones. This allows you to quickly check the time or the weather, without having to lift the phone first.

‘Some services are getting a redesign from Apple’

We have also been waiting for Apple Classical for a long time. It’s been a while since Apple took over classical music service Primephonic and now the special app for classical music really has to come in our view. In fact, we expected it to show off on our iPhones at the Spring ‘Peek Performance’ event.

There are also rumors that some other Apple services will be redesigned. For example, it concerns a new design of Apple Podcasts. In addition, Mark Gurman, a reliable Apple analyst, reported that on iOS 16 you can read your data even more clearly with the Health app. Files, Mail and Reminders are also likely to receive a minor update.

Which iPhones will get iOS 16?

It remains to be seen which functions we will see exactly. In any case, we are ready. We do have some bad news for users of the iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus, and the first iPhone SE. There are rumors that these smartphones will not support iOS 16. If you have an iPhone 7 or newer, you can expect an update to iOS 16.
