Apple has yet to release the first beta of iOS 17.5, but there are already two features we expect to see with the upcoming software update.
iOS 17.5 is coming
The new features of iOS 17.5 will likely allow iPhone users in the EU to download apps directly from eligible developer websites. The update may also include some changes to the way Apple ID recovery contacts work.
Web Distribution
Apple recently announced that eligible developers will soon be able to distribute their iOS apps directly from their website to users in the EU. Apple also said that this new ‘Web Distribution’ will be available later this spring with a software update for the iPhone, which likely points to iOS 17.5.
‘Web Distribution’ is limited to larger developers in the EU. To be eligible, the developer must have been a continuous member for two years or more Apple Developer Program and have an app that has been installed more than one million times in the EU in the previous calendar year. It builds on the alternative app stores that Apple has already allowed on iPhones in the EU since iOS 17.4. These changes have been made to comply with EU law on digital markets.
Recover contacts Apple ID
iOS 17.5 may include some changes to Apple ID recovery contacts, according to Apple leaker Nicolás Álvarez. He didn’t share specific details and said there’s a chance the changes won’t be visible to users. Setting up recovery contacts for your Apple ID can ensure that you always have access to your account, even if you forget the password or passcode for a paired device.
iOS 17.5 will be released at the end of May
iOS 17.5 including the new features will probably not be released to everyone until the end of May. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said last week that Apple will complete internal development of the first beta of iOS 17.5 this week. However, it is unclear whether that means the first beta will be released this week or later.
