While everyone is waiting for iOS 18, Apple is already working on iOS 18.2, which will bring several new features and will be released in December.
iOS 18.2 coming in December
iOS 18.2 is likely to release in December, as that’s when Apple will make Apple Intelligence available in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, and the United Kingdom. Additionally, Apple previously released iOS 15.2, iOS 16.2, and iOS 17.2 in December. Here are the features we’re expecting:
Apple Intelligence in more countries
As mentioned, iOS 18.2 will expand Apple Intelligence to Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, and the UK in December. In the US, Apple Intelligence is available on iPhone 15 Pro models and all four iPhone 16 models starting with iOS 18.1.
iOS 18.1 is already available as a developer beta and includes Apple Intelligence-features such as writing tools for proofreading text, creating summaries, recording and transcribing phone calls, and a tool in the Photos app that lets you quickly remove objects from a photo. When Apple Intelligence will be available in the EU is not yet known.
Image Playground and Genmoji
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, two other Apple Intelligence features will be coming to iOS 18.2 in December, namely Image Playground for generating images and Genmoji for generating custom emoji.
ChatGPT Integration with Siri
ChatGPT will be available through Siri before the end of the year, according to Apple, so that will likely happen with the arrival of iOS 18.2 in December.
With the user’s permission, Siri can show ChatGPT’s answers directly in response to questions and other prompts. ChatGPT is also an option for the Writing Tools feature, which lets users generate text and images. According to Apple, ChatGPT is powered by OpenAI’s latest GPT-4o model.
iPhone, iPad, and Mac users can use ChatGPT for free without creating an account. ChatGPT Plus subscribers can link their accounts to access paid features on those devices. Apple says OpenAI does not log ChatGPT requests and hides user IP addresses.
AirPods Pro 2 Hearing Features
During the iPhone 16 event, Apple announced new features Hearing Check, Hearing Aid, and Noise Reduction, which are expected to be available on AirPods Pro 2 this fall in over 100 countries, including the US, Germany, and Japan.
Based on this timeframe, and since these features haven’t yet been included in the iOS 18.1 developer beta, it’s quite possible Apple will add them to iOS 18.2 in December.
Here’s what else is coming to iOS 18.2 in December
iOS 18.2 will also likely include these additional new features:
- The Transactions, Updates, and Promotions categories in the Mail app.
- Support for robot vacuum cleaners in the Home app.
