Apple has brought so many features to your iPhone with iOS 18 that you probably haven’t discovered them all yet. These are the features you don’t know about yet!
iOS 18
Have you updated your iPhone to iOS 18 yet? Apple has implemented many changes on your smartphone with the update. You have much more freedom in arranging the home screen and the Control Center, because you now decide where to place all apps and controls. In addition, Apple has introduced functions in apps such as iMessage, Photos and Safari in iOS 18.
With iOS 18, Apple is bringing a lot of changes to your iPhone, but the company has not explained all the new features. For example, FaceTime, Siri and the Wallet app have also been improved in iOS 18. These are small changes that make using the apps safer and more pleasant. We have listed the adjustments for you.
1. Siri works better in the car
Siri gets a lot better in iOS 18, because Apple’s voice assistant will soon work with Apple Intelligence. Unfortunately, that update will not come to the Netherlands until 2025 (or later), but that is not the only improvement that Apple has made to Siri. The voice assistant works much better in cars after the update, especially if the vehicle does not have CarPlay. From iOS 18, the audio quality of Siri is clearer when your iPhone is connected via Bluetooth.
This way, the voice assistant will pick up commands faster when you are driving and have a wireless connection to the speakers. You will need to adjust the Siri settings for this. To do this, go to the settings of your iPhone to ‘Siri > Siri responses’. There, enable the special Bluetooth function for the car. Be careful, because you can often only turn this on if your iPhone is connected to Bluetooth in the car.
2. Higher image quality on FaceTime
Do you regularly make calls via FaceTime? Then you will get a handy feature in iOS 18, because the image quality of video calls is improved if you have the data saving mode turned on on your device. With this function, your mobile data will be used less quickly by reducing the image quality in apps like FaceTime. Apple is changing that with iOS 18.
From iOS 18, more data is used when network conditions are good. This means that the image quality is higher, but only when the network allows it. Do you have poor or hardly any reception? Then the image quality remains low, so that unnecessary data is not used. This way, your data usage remains low in data-saving mode, but you do get a higher image quality at certain times.
3. Wallet requires Live Photos
Adding important documents to the Wallet app is now much more secure. Starting with iOS 18, Apple will ask for a Live Photo when uploading identification documents. A Live Photo captures the moment just before and after the photo. A Live Portrait photo shows facial movements so that they can be analyzed. This is important, because it makes it harder to commit fraud by sending an invalid photo.
In the United States, it is already possible to add an ID to your Wallet. This is also being worked on in Europe, for which you must first send a Live Photo with iOS 18. It is not yet known for which other documents Apple requires a Live Photo. With this function, Apple has at least made the Wallet app in iOS 18 a lot more secure.
More features in iOS 18
Apple brings many new features to your iPhone with iOS 18. This is just the beginning, because with Apple Intelligence many more changes are coming. Almost every app is expanded with useful AI functions. For example, you get a handy writing aid that can summarize or rewrite texts for you. With Apple Intelligence it becomes much easier to keep track of your mail or to shorten long texts.
Unfortunately, it will take some time before Apple adds all the features of Apple Intelligence to iOS 18.
