Next month Apple will present iOS 19, but in the meantime iOS 18 has received a handy feature. Here you will find the function!
iOS 18
It is almost a year since Apple announced IOS 18. With the new software version you got more freedom when setting up the home screen and the control panel. That’s not all, because for the first time you also had the opportunity to adjust the standard apps on your iPhone. Apple did not introduce that feature entirely in iOS 18, because this is the result of European legislation.
New European Regulation has forced Apple to open certain systems to third parties. That is the reason that you can now install alternative web stores and are no longer dependent on the standard Apple apps. It is possible to choose which applications you use as a camera, to send emails or as a photo library. A feature has now been added in iOS 18, because you can set a different translation app for the first time.

Standard app for translating
It has been possible for some time to choose a different standard app for translating on your iPhone, but no application provided support for the new feature in iOS 18. That has now changed, because Google Translate can be set for the first time as a standard translation app on the iPhone. Do you prefer to use Google Translate than Apple’s own translation app? This is how you set it:
- Open ‘settings’ on your iPhone;
- Scroll down and tap ‘Apps’;
- Open ‘standard apps’;
- Choose ‘translation’;
- Finally, select ‘Google Translate’.
Does Google Translate not appear with the standard app settings on your iPhone? Then check whether you have installed the application on your smartphone, because that is a requirement to set Google Translate as a standard translation app. You can install Google Translate for free in the App Store, the use of the app is also free. The latest version of Google Translate supports the feature of iOS 18, which makes it possible to use the app as a standard translation program on your iPhone.

No longer dependent on Apple apps
The new feature from Google Translate is now available on iPhones that run on iOS 18.4 or newer. On the iPad you can also set Google Translate as a standard translation app, for which the tablet on iPados 18.4 or newer must run. Both the iPhone and the iPad therefore have a handy function, with which you are less dependent on Apple’s own applications. You can now decide for yourself which program you use for translating texts.
It is expected that more apps will support this feature of iOS 18 in the future. Developers need the time to adjust the software to the function of iOS 18. That has now succeeded at Google Translate, later more applications will probably follow. This way you get more and more options when setting the standard apps on your iPhone. With iOS 19, even more options are added, so you can even choose another voice assistant. Read more about iOS 19 here!
