iOS 26.1 is now the recommended update for iOS 18 users.

iOS 26 rolled out to all users in September, but was initially only offered as a secondary update in settings, while versions of iOS 18 took priority. Now Apple has designated iOS 26.1 as the new standard update for users.

Recently we noticed that many users remained on iOS 18 and we were regularly asked how to install iOS 26. For example, some wrongly thought that their device did not support iOS 26, but the update turned out to be hidden. This has now been resolved: iOS 26.1 is the recommended update for those still using iOS 18.

Updating not immediately required

Previously, a major new iOS version from Apple was immediately promoted as a standard update in the iPhone settings. However, the company has slowed the rollout of major software updates in recent years. This way everyone has time to switch to the latest version at the best time.

Last September, iOS 26 and iOS 18.7 were released on the same day. iPhone users who opened Settings â–¸ General â–¸ Software Update would see iOS 18.7 prominently displayed. You had to scroll down to find a small banner with iOS 26 as an alternative update.

iOS 26.1 is now the recommended update

Now Apple appears ready to move more iPhone users to the latest major software version. The iPhone’s software update screen now prominently shows iOS 26.1, while iOS 18.7.2 has been downgraded to ‘alternate version’ status. Users will now see a badge in the Settings app indicating that the new update is available, but it will not be installed without direct user action. Major OS upgrades require users to manually install the new version, even if they have automatic updates enabled.
