iPad 2022 only supports Apple Pencil 1 (but why?)

The iPad 2022 looks nice with all those colors, but despite all expectations, the tablet only has support for the Apple Pencil 1. Why didn’t Apple choose the Apple Pencil 2?

iPad 2022 only works with Apple Pencil 1

Apple did not show the new iPad 2022 via an Apple event, but came with a number of press releases in which the new tablet was presented. The cool colors and the new design immediately caught the eye.

iPad 2022 only supports Apple Pencil 1 (but why?)

But one thing was strange: the iPad 2022 only supports the Apple Pencil 1. Secretly quite strange, because the Lightning port has disappeared with the iPad 2022 and you need it to charge the first generation Apple Pencil.

Special adapter for Apple Pencil 1

Apple has come up with something for that, but it is certainly not a nice solution. When you buy an Apple Pencil 1 now, you get a USB-C to Apple Pencil adapter. You then plug that adapter into the Lighting connection of your Pencil. You then have to take the USB-c charging cable of your iPad to connect the pencil to the tablet or charging block. When you thought it already looked strange to plug the Apple Pencil 1 directly into your iPad…

But what if you already have an Apple Pencil 1 and want to buy an iPad 2022? Apple has come up with a solution for that too. You can then purchase the adapter yourself, for 10 euros.

iPad 2022: why not support Apple Pencil 2?

It would have been better if Apple had built in support for the Apple Pencil 2 with the iPad 2022. You leave it on by clicking it on the magnetic edge of the iPad. Both the iPad Air and the iPad Pro have this feature.

But Apple has moved the camera with the iPad 2022. It is now in the long side of the tablet (where you can charge the Pencil 2 with the Air and Pro). This has probably prevented Apple from incorporating the magnets needed to charge the Apple Pencil 2 into the edge.

Charging the Apple Pencil 2 on one of the shorter sides is also not possible, because that is where the on/off button with Touch ID is located. On the other side you will find the USB-C port. Apple would then have to tinker too much with the design.

Time for the Apple Pencil 3?

It is also possible that Apple is currently working on a new Apple Pencil. Perhaps the Apple Pencil 3 will have a USB-C connection, so that you can charge and use it with the iPad 2022 later.

It is not known when the Apple Pencil 3 will come. The first Apple Pencil appeared in November of 2015. The second generation came out in November 2018. Actually, Apple is already a bit behind with the introduction of a new Apple Pencil, so it’s high time for an update!

Apple Pencil alternative: Crayon

And you don’t like that adapter at all? Then try a Logitech Crayon. Logitech’s Crayon is a great drawing stylus for the iPad, supported by hundreds of apps. It is a pity that pressure sensitivity is missing, but it is also a lot cheaper.

The stylus costs 69.95 euros and is for sale at Logitech, among others. And charging? You do that with a Lightning cable!
