There are more and more rumors about an iPad Air 2024 with a new design. But what exactly will change?
iPad Air 2024 gets a new design: this is going to change
According to rumors, the design is not completely overhauled, but still enough to immediately see that you have an iPad Air 2024 in your hands. According to a post on Weibo (a kind of Chinese X / Twitter), the front camera will be moved.
The camera on the iPaid Air 2024 then moves from the short side to the long side of the iPad. When you hold the iPad Air 2024 horizontally, the camera is at the top (or bottom) of the screen.
This also means when you use the iPad Air 2024 with a Magic Keyboard Folio, the camera is at the top of the screen. This is easier for online meetings or FaceTime calls, for example.
According to rumors, the iPad Air isn’t the only iPad to undergo this change. The camera in the next iPad Pro will most likely also move to the long side of the iPad. In iOS 17.4, instructions were found that the iPad must be held horizontally when setting up Face ID, so that the camera is at the top of the screen.
When the design of the iPad Air 2024 and the iPad Pro 2024 is overhauled, it remains to be seen what Apple plans to do with the Apple Pencil 2. You click it magnetically onto the long side of the iPad to charge it. Maybe Apple will move the magnets slightly so that it doesn’t interfere with the camera or there will be a completely new Apple Pencil 3. Time will tell.
The changes in the design of the iPad Air 2024 are not new. The iPad 2022 is the first iPad with the camera on the long side of the tablet.
