Apple has finally released the new iPads! The iPad Pro 2024 in particular has received a major update, with a completely new processor and a new screen. Are you still unsure between the iPad Pro 2022 and the iPad Pro 2024? We have listed the most important differences between the tablets for you!

From M2 to M4

Apple has made a striking choice with the iPad Pro 2024, because the tablet runs on the completely new M4 chip. In the previous generation of the iPad Pro, this was still the M2 chip, so Apple has decided to skip the M3 chip. The new processor is extremely powerful; according to Apple, the M4 chip is even fifty percent faster than the M2 chip. With the iPad Pro 2024 you can perform the toughest tasks very quickly.

Also notable: Apple has reserved a special part of the new processor for AI functions. It is not yet known what features these will be, we will probably hear that at the WWDC in June. There is a good chance that the iPad Pro 2024 will have additional AI-related features that will not come to the iPad Pro 2022. We will know more about this when iPadOS 18 is announced.

The new chip does not affect the battery life of the tablet. The iPad Pro 2024 will last you about ten hours watching videos, the same as the iPad Pro 2022. Are you using mobile data? That is approximately nine hours for both tablets.

New OLED displays

The iPad Pro 2024 not only has a new processor, the tablet’s screen has also received a major update. Both the 11- and 13-inch versions have an OLED display. This is a major update, especially for the small variant, because the iPad Pro 2022 still had an LCD screen. The new OLED screen is a lot thinner, has better contrast and is much brighter.

Thanks to the new screen, the iPad Pro 2024 has a peak brightness of 1000 nits, while the iPad Pro 2022 has a peak brightness of 600 nits. The new tablet is therefore much easier to read in bright (day) light. In addition, Apple has introduced nano-textured glass for the first time with the iPad Pro 2024. You can choose this with the version with 1 or 2 TB. The advantage of nanotexture is that you have less reflection due to the matte finish, but you pay about 100 euros more for that.

Custom housing

The new OLED screen is much thinner than the screens of the iPad Pro 2022, making the tablet a lot slimmer this year. The 11-inch iPad Pro 2022 was 5.9 mm, while the new generation is only 5.3 mm. The difference is even greater in the 13-inch version: the iPad Pro 2022 was 6.4 mm thick, while the iPad Pro 2024 only has 5.1 mm thick. That makes this year’s Pro Apple’s thinnest device ever.

Furthermore, we see few changes in the design of the tablet. The differences in height and width are negligible between the iPad Pro 2022 and the iPad Pro 2024. The new generation is slightly lighter, the 13-inch version is 100 grams lighter than the iPad Pro 2022. You will notice this difference. the iPad Pro 2024 is easier to carry due to the modified housing. Both generations are available in silver and space black, Apple has made no changes there.

One camera less (but more functions)

Apple has made a striking choice with the camera of the iPad Pro 2024, because the tablet has one less lens than the iPad Pro 2022. The ultra-wide-angle lens has disappeared, so you can no longer optically zoom out with the new tablet. The main camera is unchanged, just like the iPad Pro 2022, it is a 12-megapixel camera. Apple has equipped the camera with a True Tone flash.

The LiDAR scanner is also present again on the iPad Pro 2024, just like on the iPad Pro 2022. Apple has introduced cool new camera functions with the new generation of the tablet. For example, the new Final Cut Camera app makes it possible to connect up to four iPhones to one iPad Pro. You will then see all camera angles on the large screen of the tablet. A handy addition, but you probably won’t need it every day.

We see a small change on the front of the tablet. Apple has moved the front camera to the long side of the iPad Pro. If you place the tablet in landscape mode, the camera is exactly in the middle. No other changes have been made, it is still a 12-megapixel camera.

New accessories

Apple has announced a number of new accessories for the iPad Pro 2024. The Apple Pencil Pro has a new way of operating it, where you can rotate the pen and ‘squeeze’ the pen. In addition, Apple has released a new Magic Keyboard, with a modified design, function keys and a larger trackpad. This Magic Keyboard is specially designed for the new iPad Pro.

The new accessories only work with the iPad Pro 2024, for the iPad Pro 2022 you have to rely on the previous generations of the Apple Pencil and the Magic Keyboard. Striking detail: the Apple Pencil 2 does not work with the new iPad Pro. Do you still have a second generation Apple Pencil? Then you also have to buy a new stylus if you switch to the iPad Pro 2024.

iPad Pro 2024 more expensive

Apple has increased the prices of the iPad Pro this year. While the iPad Pro 2022 cost 1,069 euros for the basic model, the iPad Pro 2024 costs 1,219 euros. Yet the difference is not very big, because the new iPad Pro 2024 starts at 256 GB. With the iPad Pro 2022 you still had the choice of 128 GB or 256 GB. If you take that difference into account, the new iPad is only 20 euros more expensive.

The iPad Pro received a major update this year, with a completely new M4 chip, OLED screen and a much thinner design. The new processor in particular is a reason to switch to the tablet, because it means you can be sure that the device will last for years to come. It remains to be seen which AI functions Apple has in store for the new M4 chip, we will only know more about that later.

Don’t want to pay the top price? Then the iPad Pro 2022 is still a very good tablet.
