iPadOS 18 was presented by Apple on June 10, but unfortunately not all iPads support the update. These tablets will soon be able to update to iPadOS 18!
iPadOS 18: these iPads receive support
As usual with a major update, not all iPads will receive support for the new generation of iPadOS in September. Most models with an Apple A10 or A10X processor cannot update to iPadOS 18. These are the sixth generation iPad, the 10.5-inch iPad Pro and the second generation iPad Pro with a 12.9-inch screen. The following iPads will in any case receive support:
- iPad 2019 (seventh generation)
- iPad 2020 (eighth generation)
- iPad 2021 (ninth generation)
- iPad 2022 (tenth generation)
- iPad mini 2019 (fifth generation)
- iPad mini 2021 (sixth generation)
- iPad Air 2019 (third generation)
- iPad Air 2020 (fourth generation)
- iPad Air 2022 (fifth generation)
- iPad Air 2024 (sixth generation)
- iPad Pro 2018 (third generation)
- iPad Pro 2020 (fourth generation)
- iPad Pro 2021 (fifth generation)
- iPad Pro 2022 (sixth generation)
- iPad Pro 2024 (seventh generation)
No support for sixth generation
It is striking that the seventh generation iPad will receive support for iPadOS 18, but the sixth generation and the iPad Pro models will not. They are all powered by the Apple A10 or A10X processor. The iPad Pros also have 4 GB of RAM, while the seventh generation of the iPad only has 3 GB.
This is because Apple sometimes bases software support on a product’s age, rather than its specifications. The result is that hardware that is clearly capable of running the software is no longer supported. And that is of course a shame.
Support for Apple Intelligence
The list of iPads with support for iPadOS 18 is quite decent, but unfortunately this does not apply to the list of iPads that support Apple Intelligence’s AI features. However, it is not as dramatic as with the iPhone, where only the iPhone 15 Pro (Max) receives support. In the case of the iPad, you need an iPad Air or Pro with an M1 chip or newer for the latest AI features.
In addition to Apple Intelligence, there is another function that requires a newer device. For handwriting improvement SmartScript (specially designed for Apple Pencil) requires an iPad with Apple M series chips or an A14, which excludes all older models with A10, A12 and A13 series chips.
