It is one of the spearheads of the iPhone 13 Pro (Max): the renewed ProMotion screen. This 120Hz screen supports a very high refresh rate. But what good is it?
iPhone 13 Pro: ProMotion screen
The new iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max have a Super Retina XDR display that refreshes the image at up to 120 frames per second (120Hz). With the previous models this was still half: 60Hz. There are many reasons to look forward to the 120Hz screen of the iPhone 13 Pro. We name four.
1. iPhone feels faster
Because the screen refreshes up to two times faster, the iPhone can show more frames. This makes your iPhone feel much faster. You notice this, for example, when scrolling and swiping, or opening and closing an app. Your iPhone responds faster to your touches, making everything feel smoother.
2. Better graphics in games
A higher refresh rate is also nice when playing games. The delay between pressing a button and what happens on the screen is reduced, making the game feel smoother and smoother. And that, in combination with the much better graphics performance of the new 5-core GPU, makes the iPhone 13 Pro a great device for avid gamers.
3. Augmented Reality
Augmented reality apps look more realistic with a 120Hz screen. If you now conjure up an IKEA furniture in your living room with an AR app, or a tattoo on your arm, you will see that images falter a bit. The ProMotion display of the iPhone 13 Pro will soon make it all feel more realistic and smooth.
4. Good for the battery
A screen that refreshes the image 120 times per second requires a lot from the battery. Still, the ProMotion screen of the iPhone 13 Pro may be more energy efficient than the screen of the iPhone 12 Pro. This has everything to do with the fact that the refresh rate now fluctuates: from 10Hz to 120Hz.
Some tasks don’t require the screen to refresh quickly; for example, if you are viewing a simple web page. While the screen used to always refresh at 60Hz, the ‘refresh rate‘ of the iPhone 13 Pro constantly.
You do not have to set this yourself, but it happens automatically. For example, if you watch a movie recorded at 24 fps, the ProMotion screen also refreshes 24 times per second. It does not consume the display more energy than necessary, which is very convenient.
