iPhone 14 battery problem: nonsense or does it really exist?

iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro owners have been complaining about a battery issue for a few weeks now. Is it nonsense or is there really something going on?

iPhone 14 battery problem

Around August 12, the first reports of a problem with the iPhone 14 battery surfaced. It was claimed that the battery drains much faster than it should. According to these people, the maximum capacity of the battery (found in the settings of your iPhone) decreases far too quickly.

Sam Kohl of Apple Track was one of the first to indicate that the capacity of his iPhone 14 Pro battery is already at 90 percent after less than a year. He found this unacceptable.

Wall Street Journal’s Joanna Stern also wondered why her iPhone 14 Pro’s battery was down to 88 percent. For comparison, Stern’s three-year-old iPhone 12 Pro still had 80% capacity.

These are just a few examples, there are many more people who complain on social media about a battery problem with the iPhone 14. In general, it is about a battery that after a year only has a capacity of about 88 to 92 per cent.

Expectation of the iPhone 14 battery

The ‘complainants’ believe that the maximum capacity should not be around 90% one year after release. And that the percentage should in any case not drop faster than the batteries of previous iPhones. Because this is the case with many, there is talk of an iPhone 14 battery problem.

Apple enters ‘Battery service and recyclinga guideline for what to expect from an iPhone battery. It is said to be designed to retain up to 80 percent of its original capacity after 500 full charge cycles. A full charge cycle means that the battery is discharged and then recharged to full capacity.

No increase in battery failures

The number of battery defects of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro that Apple has resolved is slightly lower than in the past. This would be in line with the fewer number of iPhone 14 models sold compared to iPhone 13 models.

If there really were an iPhone 14 battery problem, there should be a significant discrepancy in the number of battery defects. But to date, this has not been the case with any iPhone 14 or iPhone 14 Pro model. So nothing seems to be going on at the moment.

Why the percentage decreases more quickly for some users can have a number of causes. The most obvious reason is an increase in battery usage, with intensive apps like games consuming more power in a short time frame. And the always-on screen also consumes some extra power.
