iPhone 14 has an even bigger camera island than expected

Cases of the upcoming iPhone 14 series have surfaced on the Chinese internet platform Weibo. They show that the camera island of the new flagship is a lot bigger.

iPhone 14 has bigger camera island

The iPhone gets an impressive camera upgrade almost every year. With the iPhone 14 this is both literally and figuratively so, because the camera bump on the back is rumored to be a lot bigger. This is in width, height and depth.

Surfaced iPhone 14 cases now confirm these rumors. It shows that a remarkable amount of space has been reserved for the camera module of the new iPhone series. These are covers that are made by third parties, so not by Apple itself.

The cases are probably based on detailed CAD drawings that case makers usually get their hands on well before an iPhone release. The drawings show in detail the dimensions and technical details of the iPhones, so that the iPhone 14 cases can already be produced.

Why does the camera bump get bigger?

All iPhone 14 models are expected to get a better sensor with the ultra-wide angle lens. With the Pro devices (the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max), Apple is reportedly even tackling all three cameras. The wide-angle lens and telephoto lens are also waiting for an upgrade.

The wide-angle lens of the iPhone 14 Pro (Max) is especially interesting, because all rumors indicate that it is a 48-megapixel lens. That is a significant improvement over the current 12 MP camera. It will also be possible to shoot video recordings in 8K for the first time.

A 48-megapixel sensor also has a drawback. Because the individual pixels become smaller, the sensor receives less light. To make the camera perform well in low light, the iPhone 14 Pro uses pixel binning† You can read more about this in the article iPhone 14 Pro may get a 48-megapixel camera (and that’s how it will work).
