The iPhone 15 is reportedly getting a completely new U2 chip for ultra-wideband technology, which makes several functions much better. We’ll tell you what’s changing.
iPhone 15 gets new U2 chip
Now that Apple has unveiled iOS 17, the presentation of the iPhone 15 is also getting closer. We already know a lot about the new phones through rumors, for example, the iPhone 15 Pro Max gets the new periscope camera and the devices get thinner screen edges than we’ve ever seen on an iPhone. Reportedly, the iPhone 15 will now also receive a completely new U2 chip.

The fact that Apple chooses to provide the iPhone 15 with a new processor has to do with the upcoming release of the Vision Pro. Apple’s first VR glasses are extremely advanced, so the iPhone 15 also needs a considerable hardware update to work well with the glasses. And that’s good news, because with the new U2 chip, several functions become much better with the iPhone 15.
Find My and AirDrop will work better soon
Since the iPhone 11, Apple has provided every iPhone with the U1 chip. This processor has to do with functions related to location determination, such as Find My, Handoff and AirDrop. For example, you can see exactly where Find My items are in your area. The chip also ensures that devices in Apple’s ecosystem can work well together and connect easily. And that is precisely the reason why Apple now chooses to introduce the new U2 chip.
The ecosystem is one of the most important parts for the Vision Pro. The glasses must be able to work easily with, for example, your MacBook or Apple TV to be a success. That is why the iPhone 15 will already receive the U2 chip this year. An additional advantage is that Find My, AirDrop and Handoff work much better with the new iPhone. For example, you will soon find your iPhone faster and more precisely with Find My thanks to the new chip.
iPhone 15 will be released in September
The U1 chip is not only incorporated in the iPhones, but can also be found in the Apple Watch Series 6 or newer, the AirTags, the HomePod (mini) and the AirPods Pro. It is therefore expected that the next generations of these devices will also receive the new U2 chip after a while. The iPhone 15 will in any case be the first device with the updated processor.
