With the iPhone 15, only the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max had an action button. This button replaced the mute switch that you still see on the iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 Plus, among others.
Now, Apple has decided to make the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max all feature this new action button. So there is no iPhone 16 with a mute button.
The Action button on iPhone 16 is a customizable button that lets you quickly access certain functions. The button can be set to perform different actions depending on your personal preference, such as opening the camera directly to take a quick photo or activating Shazam to identify a song.
Additionally, you can connect the iPhone 16’s action button to accessibility features, like activating the magnifier or the Translate app to quickly translate text. You can also use the button to launch a specific app or execute a command.

With iOS 18 (installed by default on every iPhone 16) the action button gets a few more functions. With no less than fourteen new functions, the action button becomes even more versatile. For example, settings are added for: Calculator, Stopwatch, Alarm and Home.
