The regular iPhone 16 will probably support Apple Intelligence, but will receive many more changes that make a switch worthwhile. These are the expectations!
iPhone 16 will get these changes
Most of the rumors lately have been about the iPhone 16 Pro models. However, there will also be improvements for the regular models of the iPhone 16 series. We will have to do without Apple Intelligence in the EU for the time being, but there are also changes that you can expect immediately with the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus.
iPhone 16 changes
A new chip
Something that will almost certainly happen is a chip upgrade. Since the iPhone 14, Apple has switched to a system where the latest chip is for the Pro models and the previous version is used for the regular models. For example, the Pro models of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 used the A16 Bionic and A17 Pro respectively, and the regular models used the A15 Bionic and A16 Bionic.
Thanks to this change, the Pro models have a significantly more powerful chip than the non-Pro models. If this remains the case for the iPhone 16, it’s likely that the A17 Pro chip will be reused for the iPhone 16, while the iPhone 16 Pro line will move to the A18 chip. However, there are also rumors that the A18 will be used for the entire iPhone 16 series.
In any case, the chip change is important for the iPhone 16. The A17 with 8 GB of RAM is the first iPhone chip that is compatible with Apple Intelligence. A shift to the A17 is therefore necessary for the next iPhone releases.
A better screen
Since the launch of the iPhone 15, rumors have been circulating that the iPhone 16’s screens will become larger in general. But while the Pro models are expected to be about 0.2 inches larger each, the regular models are expected to be about the same size and weight as the iPhone 15 series. In theory, this means that the iPhone 16 should have a 6.1-inch screen and the iPhone 16 Plus should have a 6.7-inch screen.
Despite the same physical dimensions, there is another change that could improve the device: screens with BRS (Border Reduction Structure) technology. The first rumor about this appeared in March, but in April problems with its production were reported. Last month a rumor appeared that the Pro models will have the thinnest edges ever. But there’s a chance that the regular models will get this too.
An improved camera
Most rumors also concern the camera about the iPhone 16 Pro models. There is intense debate about the tetraprysal lens. This will come to both Pro models, but probably not yet to the regular models. With the iPhone 16 Pro and the iPhone 16 Pro Max it will soon be possible to zoom in up to 5x.
We expect a change in the camera island with the regular iPhone 16. Several molds and dummies show a vertical camera setup for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, instead of the diagonal placement in a square. This adjustment makes it possible for the iPhone 16 to record spatial videos for the Vision Pro.
There are also rumors of new lens coatings to reduce lens flare and other artifacts. And thinner lenses might be used, reducing weight. In the absence of concrete rumors about changes to the sensor in the regular models, it is likely that Apple will not change much in that regard. The biggest changes are seen in the camera of the iPhone 16 Pro.
A new action button
The action button on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max replaced the mute switch with a multi-function button. The regular iPhone 15 retained the mute switch. For the iPhone 16, it is expected that the action button will also come to the ‘normal’ models. A logical step given Apple’s penchant for porting Pro features to non-Pro variants. There are also rumors that the iPhone 16 Pro will have a capture button. It is unclear whether this is one of the changes coming to the iPhone 16.
A better battery
Apple has long been trying to extend battery life, either by increasing capacity or by being more energy efficient. There are rumors that battery capacity is getting better for most models.
A battery capacity of 3561 mAh is expected for the iPhone 16, compared to 3367 mAh for the iPhone 15. For the iPhone 16 Plus, it is rumored to go the other way. The expectation is a battery with a capacity of 4006 mAh, which is less than the 4407 mAh battery in the iPhone 15 Plus. It’s just not clear how accurate the rumors are.
Other changes may have to do with the technologies used to make the batteries. They may also become more environmentally friendly, as Apple has previously stated that all batteries will use fully recycled cobalt by 2025. In any case, it is hoped that the battery will become much better, so that your iPhone no longer needs to be charged every night.
