iPhone 16 screen rumors: here’s what to expect

There have already been quite a few rumors about the iPhone 16’s display, so it’s high time to list them all!

iPhone 16 screen rumors

Not all rumours that appear are equally reliable. Which ones will and will not become reality, of course, remains to be seen.

Size and brightness

One of the first rumors is about the size of the screens. The screens of the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus would remain the same as those of the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus (6.1 inch and 6.7 inch). The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max screens, on the other hand, get bigger: 6.3 inch and 6.9 inches.

The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are also said to get a new screen. They will then be the first iPhones with Samsung’s M14 OLED screen. This new display lasts much longer and is also a lot brighter. The maximum brightness of the new iPhone Pros is 1200 nits as standard, while the iPhone 15 Pro Max is still 1000 nits. This makes the screen even easier to read in direct sunlight and the colors are a lot more vivid.

Dynamic Island and Face ID

Rumors are that the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will get the Dynamic Island like their predecessors. This is in contrast to the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. On the Pro models, the Face ID sensor disappears under the screen, making the Dynamic Island redundant.

The front of the iPhone 16 Pro models consists entirely of screen. There is still a small point visible because of the front camera. In addition, the screen edges are also a bit thinner. The iPhone 15 already got screen edges that are much thinner in 2023, but with the iPhone 16 models, Apple goes even further!

always-on display

ProMotion and always-on

The iPhone 15 Pro Max’s custom LTPO (Low Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide) panels feature ProMotion, which allows the display to support a variable refresh rate of up to 120Hz. Apple is expected to use these panels in the iPhone 16 series as well, only in the Pro models. This means that ProMotion will be limited to the Pro models, meaning that the regular iPhones will once again not get an always-on display this year.

The iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Plus will get an OLED screen with ProMotion according to other rumors. These would then be the first ‘standard’ iPhones that also get an always-on screen. Of course, we will have to wait another year for this.

iPhone 16 screen rumors: Apple event

We will know on Monday, September 9, which rumors about the screens of the new iPhones will become reality. That is when Apple will present the iPhone 16 series during the ‘It’s Glowtime‘-event that starts at 7pm Dutch time.
