iPhone 17 appears to be very sensitive to scratches (by this part)

Apple has the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max with a new housing, but it appears to be very sensitive to scratches. This is because of this part.

iPhone 17 scratches

The new iPhones have been in stores since Friday 19 September! With the release of new iPhones, the first weekend is usually very interesting, because that is the time when potential problems arise from the devices. That is indeed the case with the iPhone 17 Pro and the iPhone 17 Pro Max, because the devices prove very sensitive to scratches. The back of the Pro models already shows the first deep scratches in many stores.

The iPhone 17 Pro and the iPhone 17 Pro Max are equipped with a renewed design. Where Apple chose the iPhone 16 Pro (Max) for a housing of titanium, that material with the iPhone 17 Pro (Max) has been replaced by aluminum. The Pro models consist of one whole of aluminum, with a glass part at the rear for wireless charging. The aluminum part of the iPhone 17 Pro and the iPhone 17 Pro Max in particular appears to be sensitive to scratches.

Deep blue and cosmic orange

The scratches are not equally visible at all versions of the iPhone 17 Pro and the iPhone 17 Pro Max. The deep blue variant in particular suffers from scratches, because the blue color of the housing is removed. The original color of the aluminum is therefore visible, which is much lighter than the deep blue hue of the iPhone 17 Pro (Max). The contrast between the blue housing and the light aluminum is large, making the scratches more clearly visible.

With the iPhone 17 Pro (Max) you can also opt for the colors cosmic orange or silver. With these versions, the scratches are less visible, because orange and silver are already light colors. The underlying aluminum color is less noticeable in scratches in the iPhone 17 Pro and the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Are you afraid of scratches on your next iPhone? Then it is advisable to choose a lighter color with the iPhone 17 Pro (Max).

Glass back iPhone 17

The back of the iPhone 17 Pro and the iPhone 17 Pro Max not only consists of aluminum, but also has a glass part. With this glass back, iPhone 17 Pro (Max) has support for wireless charging and magsafe. Unfortunately, this part of the iPhone 17 Pro and the iPhone 17 Pro Max is also sensitive to scratches, although they stand out less than with the aluminum part of the housing.

The scratches on the glass part of the iPhone 17 Pro (Max) are less likely to be seen with the naked eye and are reportedly easier to wipe away than the scratches in the aluminum. Are you planning to purchase an iPhone 17 Pro or iPhone 17 Pro Max? Or have you already bought the new phone? Then scratches are easy to prevent with a phone case. Due to the wider camera island of the iPhone 17 Pro (Max) you have to get a new telephone case, the covers of the iPhone 16 Pro (Max) and earlier do not fit on the iPhones of 2025.
