iPhone 17 Pro models with a vapor room for cooling

The new iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are equipped with a new type of cooling by Apple. Apple has opted for cooling based on a vapor room. This prevents the device from getting too hot quickly and that the performance of the A19 Pro chip remains optimal.

To prevent overheating while performing complex tasks, Apple has decided to use a vapor room and an aluminum housing in the iPhone 17 Pro. The iPhone 16 Pro with passive cooling and a Titanium housing quickly got problems when used in higher temperatures.

No more passive cooling

With the iPhone 16 Pro, a passive cooling system has been used that contains a low graphene. Graphene is a huge thin material that consists of a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal pattern, similar to a honeycomb. It is extraordinarily strong and flexible, and conducts heat excellently, so that it can drain heat very effectively. The titanium housing of the iPhone 16 Pro against this retains much more heat than aluminum.

Many iPhone 16 Pro (Max) users found that their device quickly became too hot, especially at higher ambient temperatures. While performing complex tasks or taking photos and videos, a message often appears in such situations that the device is too hot. As a result, the performance of the device decreased because the processor started running at lower speeds.

This was a reason for Apple to switch to a more advanced cooling system with a vapor room (known in English as a Vapor Room) and to return the aluminum housing to the iPhone 17 Pro models.

Cooling using a vapor room (Vapor Room)

A vapor room is an advanced cooling system where a metal room with a small amount of demineralized water is placed directly above the A19 Pro chip. The vapor room is special laser cover in the aluminum frame of the iPhone 17 Pro models.

The Vapor Chamber in the iPhone 17 Pro is a thin sealed metal room with a small amount of liquid that is placed directly above important heat sources such as the A19 Pro chip. As soon as the device gets warmer, this liquid evaporates. The vapor quickly spreads through the room and transports the heat to cooler parts. Where the vapor again condenses and fluid flows back to the warm point, a process that is constantly repeating. This process ensures that heat is spread and removed very efficiently over a larger surface. Without using moving parts such as fans.

The vapor room can make long -term high performance guaranteed, especially when using demanding apps and mobile games. It reduces the risk of overheating and protects the internal components of the iPhone 17 Pro. In addition, this cooling method contributes to improved battery performance due to more efficient heat dissipation.

Apple is certainly not the first manufacturer to use a vapor room. This way of cooling has been used for some time in a number of high-end Android devices. Samsung uses the cooling since since the Galaxy 23 models and Xiaomi in the MI 11 Ultra and Gaming smartphones.

The iPhone 17 and iPhone Air models continue to use passive cooling based on graphite layers.

With the iPhone 17 Pro, Apple has opted for an aluminum housing instead of titanium, partly because of the cooling. Aluminum drains heat more effectively, which is essential with the new cooling system with a vapor room in the iPhone 17 Pro. The material has a higher thermal conductivity than titanium, which contributes to cooling internal parts such as the A19 Pro chip and the battery.
