iPhone 17 vs iPhone 16: these are the differences we expect

The iPhone 17 will be presented on Tuesday 9 September and these are the improvements compared to the iPhone 16 that we expect.

Now that the iPhone 17 is almost presented, it is high time to list all the important improvements in relation to the iPhone 16 – so you already know whether switching is worth you!

Housing

We know that the iPhone 17 is likely to get a screen of 6.3 inches, which is 0.2 inches bigger that that of the iPhone 16. Given that screen size, the dimensions of the housing will not deviate enormously from the iPhone 16 Pro, which also has a screen of 6.3 inches. The dimensions thereof amount to 149.6 x 71.5 x 8.3 mm. The iPhone 16 measures 147.6 x 71.6 x 7.8 mm. The iPhone 17 is probably slightly larger than the iPhone 16, but the difference will not be great.

Screen

The iPhone 17 therefore gets a screen of 6.3 inches with probably a resolution of 1206 x 2622 pixels. For comparison: the 6.1-inch screen of the iPhone 16 has a resolution of 1179 x 2556 pixels. We will probably also see promotion this year on the entire iPhone 17 series. This means that a refresh rate of 120 Hz is possible and the Always-on function becomes available. You don’t have this on the iPhone 16.

Camera

The iPhone 17 will probably get the same camera as the iPhone 16, namely a 48-megapixel wide-angle camera with a diaphragm of f/1.6 and a 12-megapixel ultragro area camera with a diaphragm of f/2.2. The selfie camera also remains unchanged with 12 megapixels and a diaphragm of f/1.9. So for the camera you don’t have to switch from the iPhone 16 to the iPhone 17.

Performance

Here we see some difference compared to the iPhone 16. The iPhone 17 is expected to get a faster processor: the A19 (the iPhone 16 runs on an A18). That is also the only improvement. The amount of working memory remains the same compared to the iPhone 16 (8 GB, sufficient for it Apple Intelligence) And the same applies to the amount of storage space (128 GB, 256 GB, 512 GB).

Battery

We don’t expect that much difference here either. The screen of the iPhone 17 is slightly larger and therefore consumes slightly more energy. On the other hand, the new A19 chip of the iPhone 17 may be a bit more economical. Whether the iPhone 17 also gets a more powerful battery is not yet clear. If that is the case, the battery life may be slightly better.

Conclusion: iPhone 17 vs iPhone 16

Switching from an iPhone 16 to an iPhone 17 probably doesn’t make much sense. The only thing you extra is a slightly larger screen with always-on, a faster processor and possibly a slightly longer battery life. And maybe there is a new color that you like more.

If you have an older iPhone, it is slightly different. Would you like to save some money? Then it is better to wait a while and choose the iPhone 16 when it becomes a bit cheaper after the presentation of the iPhone 17. If you would like a larger screen with always-on, a faster chip and a little more battery life, then you just pay a little more for an iPhone 17.
