‘iPhone 17 will have a new scratch-resistant screen without reflections’

According to rumors, the iPhone 17 will have a new, non-reflective screen that is more scratch-resistant than the Ceramic Shield of the iPhone 15 models.

iPhone 17: new scratch-resistant screen without reflections

According to a new rumor, Apple has invested billions in a new coating technique for future iPhone screens. This new technology makes an iPhone screen more scratch-resistant and adds a new anti-reflection layer. The iPhone 17 is probably the first iPhone to get such a new screen.

The rumor comes from Weibo user Instant Digital, who has previously shared accurate information about upcoming iPhone announcements. According to him, Apple has developed equipment that adds a very hard layer without reflections to the iPhone’s screen, which also makes it much more scratch-resistant.

Rumor has it that the technology was only recently transferred to Apple’s supply partners in China. This suggests that it is too late for the iPhone 16 launch in a few months. So we expect such a new screen for the first time on the iPhone 17 series in 2025.

The full rumor, translated from Chinese:

Apple has spent billions on coating equipment in Japan, which has been transferred to the Chinese supply chain, but the iPhone 16 series cannot keep up. The outer glass of the iPhone 17 series is made of super hard [antireflecterende] low. You could say that the iPhone 17 series will be more scratch resistant than you think.

Ceramic Shield and Gorilla Glass Armor

Current iPhones are equipped with the so-called Ceramic Shield, which was first used on the iPhone 12 in 2020. Ceramic Shield was made by Apple and Corning. The technology described in the new rumor sounds a bit like Corning’s Gorilla Glass Armor, which appeared on the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra earlier this year. Gorilla Glass Armor reduces reflections by up to 75 percent and provides extra protection against scratches and other damage.

Given the existing partnership between Apple and Corning, it’s likely we’ll see some aspects of Gorilla Glass Armor on the iPhone’s screen. But as mentioned, we can only expect such a new screen with the iPhone 17.
