The iPhone 18 will be released next year, but according to rumors one part will make it a lot more expensive. This is what’s going on.

It will be a while before the next iPhone appears. But the first rumors have already surfaced. According to a report from the China Times prices have risen sharply for semiconductors. These semiconductors are used for chips that are also in the iPhone.

According to rumors, this will affect the prices of the new generation of chips that will be included in the iPhone 18. The iPhone 18 will have an A20 chip and this chip uses a new manufacturing process for semiconductors (of 2 nanometers).

The world’s largest chipmaker (TSMC) has already invested heavily in the development of this new manufacturing process. According to rumors, this will cause a price increase of 50 percent compared to the costs of the current production process.

If Apple soon has to pay more for their chips, it is of course not surprising to (partially) pass on the price difference to the consumer. However, it will of course still take a while before the iPhone 18 appears.

Apple may therefore choose to move some functions or improvements further forward (to the iPhone 19) so as not to increase the price too much. It remains to be seen what exactly Apple plans to do, but according to rumors a price increase seems likely to happen.

iPhone 18 Pro: these are the expectations

The iPhone 18 Pro promises to be another big step forward in 2026. The Dynamic Island will be a bit smaller with the next iPhone and according to rumors the smartphone may have a transparent or matte back.

Photo enthusiasts can also rub their hands, because the main camera gets a variable aperture. That’s nice because you can play even more with, among other things, the depth of field of a photo (the amount of blurred background).

Under the hood comes the new A20 chip with Apple’s own C2 modem. Finally, a redesigned camera button is expected, with an emphasis on pressure-sensitive operation instead of swipe gestures.
