It doesn’t happen often, but if you’ve found an iPhone there are several ways to find out who it belongs to. This is the best thing you can do.
iPhone found: this is what you need to do (and this is how you find the owner)
Sometimes it happens that someone forgets their smartphone after a night out. Usually the person finds out quite quickly, but unfortunately this does not always happen. Once you have found the iPhone, you usually cannot search for the owner in the iPhone itself. Almost everyone has secured their iPhone with code or Face ID.
1. Medical ID
Still, there are a few ways you can contact the owner of the lost iPhone. The easiest way is to use the Medical ID. The owner must have set this up, but you can check this.
- When the iPhone asks for the passcode, tap ‘Emergency’;
- Tap ‘Medical ID’ at the bottom left;
- Check the entered data.
For SOS contacts, someone who has completed their Medical ID can leave a contact number. This way you get in touch with the owner of the found iPhone.
2. Check the SIM card
If the iPhone still has a physical SIM card, you can take it out and check the number. You then provide that number to the provider. They can then see to which number the SIM card is linked and contact the customer.
3. Use social media
Sometimes found items are posted on Facebook. You can of course also do this with a found iPhone. In any case, include the location and time you found it. Also post a photo so that the owner can recognize the lost iPhone faster.
Will you get in touch with the possible owner? Always ask a verification question so that you are sure that you are dealing with the right person. For example, ask about the picture on the lock screen of the smartphone.
4. Lost and Found
Found an iPhone in a restaurant? Then it is sometimes more convenient to return the device to the owner (in this case the restaurant). The person who owns the iPhone will probably check the places he or she has been.
You can of course also take the smartphone to the police or to the municipality. They can then find the lost iPhone on the website LostOrFound to make. Even if you have lost something yourself, you can first check here whether someone has found your lost device.
