1. Extract a subject from a photo and send with effect

We start these iPhone tips with a feature that has been around since iOS 16. Since then, it has been very easy to extract a subject from a photo. You can then send that subject as a sticker, for example. You can also add effects in the Messages app. That works as follows:

  1. Open a photo and long press on a subject until the outlines light up;

  2. Release your finger and tap Copy;

  3. Start a message in Messages, tap the text field, then tap Paste;

  4. Now press and hold the send arrow;

  5. Choose the desired effect and send.

2. View your WiFi password

Number two of these iPhone tips is useful if you have a hard-to-remember Wi-Fi password. If someone needs your WiFi password, since iOS 16 you no longer have to look for the note or sticker with it on it. You can view it easily and quickly in the settings. It goes like this:

  • Open the Settings app and tap ‘WiFi’;
  • Tap the ‘i’ behind the relevant WiFi network;
  • Tap ‘Password’.

The password is secured and uses Face ID (or Touch ID) to grant access. You can then easily copy the password or have it spoken if desired.

3. Add Energy Saving Mode to Control Center

Number three of these iPhone tips is about Energy Saving Mode, a useful feature when you need to use your battery a little longer. It is therefore useful if you can easily find and enable the function. The easiest way is to add the function to the Control Panel. This is how you do it:

  • Open the Settings app’;
  • Tap ‘Control Center’;
  • Tap the plus sign for ‘Power Saving Mode’.

From now on, if you want to enable Power Saving Mode, open Control Center (swipe down from the top right of the screen) and tap the battery icon.

4. Translate text from photos

We conclude this week’s iPhone tips with the Live Text function, which has been available since iOS 15. This allows you, for example, to directly translate a menu into a foreign language without having to retype anything. The function must of course be enabled. You can check this in the following way:

  • Open the Settings app and tap ‘General’;
  • Tap ‘Language & Region’;
  • Make sure ‘Live Text’ is enabled at the bottom.

Take or open a photo, or select an image online. A video also works if you pause it. Then tap the Live Text icon at the bottom right. Then tap ‘Translate’. With the ‘Translate’ button you can now easily switch between the original text and the translation. The translations are not always accurate, but in general they help you.
