Do more with Google Arts & Culture

Most people know that Google Arts & Culture allows you to view works of art in high resolution. What is less known is that you can transform your own photos with classic works of art and that you can try out paintings virtually in your own living room. 1. Art Projector: Try out paintings in your living room

You probably don’t have the money to buy a Monet for your living room. That’s why we start these iPhone tips for Google Arts & Culture with the opportunity to hang classic paintings at home for free. Virtually that is. The app uses augmented reality to project all kinds of masterpieces at full size everywhere in your home.

Tap Play at the bottom of the screen, then tap the camera icon at the top left. Scroll down a bit and then tap ‘Art Projector’. Point your iPhone’s camera at the floor, move it in a circle and a grid of dots shows where the projection will appear. You can then choose one of fifty famous works of art, including Nighthawks by Edward Hopper, American Gothic by Grant Wood and the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci.

2. Art Selfie: Discover portraits that look like you

Number two of this week’s iPhone tips is about a popular Google Arts & Culture feature, Art Selfie. Based on a selfie, the app searches thousands of famous works of art for the portraits that most resemble you.

The results are usually not true doppelgängers, but it is still fun to try out. You will find the function under ‘Art Projector’ (see tip 1). A little lower you will also find the ‘Pet Portraits’ option. That’s more or less the same function, but for your pet.

3. Art Filter: transform your photos into works of art

The third of this week’s iPhone tips is about Art Filter, which lets you integrate a selfie into a famous work of art. What that looks like varies considerably from work to work of art. Sometimes you are still very recognizable, sometimes not at all. Art Filter can be found above ‘Art Projector’ (see tip 1).

4. Art Transfer: Transform your photos into works of art

Number four of these iPhone tips is the ‘Art Transfer’ feature. Your selfie in the style of a certain painter? No problem! Under ‘Art Selfie’ (see tip 2), tap ‘Art Transfer’. Then, to start, take a selfie. Now tap one of the many thumbnails of famous paintings at the bottom of the screen and you will immediately see the effect being applied to your photo.

The fifth of these iPhone tips is for anyone who enjoys artistic games. You can also play Google Arts & Culture games on the website try them out, but using the touchscreen on your iPhone they are both easier and more fun. Choose a color and tap a segment of the image to fill it. You can save and share the result.

games

Puzzle Party makes jigsaw puzzles from hundreds of works of art, which you can solve yourself or make together with friends. You just have to press the puzzle pieces and slide them into place. There are many more games, including visual crosswords where you have to group thumbnail images by theme, such as contemporary and Renaissance art or paintings by Van Gogh and Gauguin.
