1. Fake stores with Black Friday deals

There are many ways you can end up at a fake store. For example, via an e-mail, a price comparator, or simply by searching in Google. If you end up at an unknown store, it is a good idea to see if you can find reviews of the store on a reliable site.

But even if you end up at a well-known store, it is advisable to check whether it is really that store’s website. So check whether the URL of the website is correct and pay attention to any inconspicuous spelling errors. However, many fake stores these days look deceptively real. To warn people about this, the police in the Netherlands have their own fake shop set up.

Once you have checked everything and decide to purchase, preferably choose payment via credit card or PayPal. If something goes wrong, you can often get your money back through your credit card provider or through PayPal.

2. Fake emails from ‘real’ stores

In addition to fake stores you may encounter, you may also receive fake emails. These are emails that appear to come from real stores, but are actually sent by someone else. These are often emails that want to direct you to a fake version of that store’s website. Sometimes they are fake emails that appear to be about orders, payments, or access to your account.

You can often recognize these fake emails if you pay a little attention. There are more and more of them, so the chance that you won’t see it increases. From a recent research from security company Bitdefender showed that three out of four Black Friday emails were scam messages, intended to defraud people.

The best thing you can do when you receive an email like this is not to tap anything. Instead, go to the store’s website in your browser, log in and check the information.

3. Fake messages from delivery services

Especially during the hustle and bustle of Black Friday and the holidays, many messages are sent via email, text message or WhatsApp about parcel delivery. Criminals also respond to this. They send fake messages in the same ways that appear to come from well-known or lesser-known parcel services.

Once again, it’s not a good idea to tap on those messages, regardless of whether you’re expecting a package or not. If you are unsure whether it is a real message or not, check the delivery status by visiting the parcel service’s website yourself. You can also use the delivery service’s official app to stay informed easily and safely.
