1. Find cheap fuel

We’ll start these iPhone tips with one of the main reasons Waze is so popular. And that’s because the app can help you find cheap fuel. Moreover, it works very easily. The only thing you have to take into account is that not all prices are always up to date. That’s because all the information Waze has comes from users. And they simply don’t update all prices every day.

Just tap the search bar at the bottom of your screen. Then tap ‘Fuel’ and you’ll get a list of nearby petrol stations, complete with address, distance and, most importantly, the petrol price. If you tap on a specific location, more information will appear. Use the gear wheel at the top right to sort the results by ‘Price’, ‘Distance’ or ‘Brand’. Of course, Waze also helps you with how to drive there.

2. Have Waze notify you when it’s time to leave

The second of these iPhone tips will help you leave at the right time. You can plan this in advance. Enter a destination, tap View Routes, then tap Depart Later. Then choose the desired arrival time. The departure time varies based on the expected traffic on the road, which you can see at a glance. Finally, tap ‘Save’ at the top right. Waze will alert you when it’s time to leave.

You can also link Waze with your calendar(s). You will then receive a reminder for the appointments in the agenda when it is time to leave based on the current traffic situation. To do this, go to ‘Settings’ -> ‘Planned trips’ and tap ‘Link calendar’.

3. Optimize your routes

Number three of these iPhone tips involves different vehicles traveling different routes. This allows motorcycles to take back roads that are too narrow for a passenger car. So it’s a good idea to tell Waze what kind of vehicle you drive. Simply go to Settings > Vehicle Details > Vehicle Type and select the type you own. You can choose from a ‘Passenger car’, ‘Taxi’ and ‘Motorcycle’, but the ‘Taxi’ option is not supported in the Netherlands.

Also tell Waze what kind of fuel you use, via ‘Settings’ > ‘Gas stations’ > ‘Fuel type’. If you drive electrically, turn on the electric driving functions. To do this, go to ‘Settings’ > ‘Vehicle data’ > ‘Electric vehicles’.

4. Share your location

Number four of this week’s iPhone tips is about sharing your location. Because you can avoid as many traffic jams as you can, traveling still takes time. So if you go to someone’s house, you can inform him or her before you leave. You do this by starting your journey and then tapping the arrow at the bottom right. Then tap ‘Share ride’. Choose the relevant contact person so that they can see where you are going, when you expect to arrive and how your progress is going.

You can also stop at any time: just tap the arrow at the bottom right again, then tap the green Ride Shared icon. You will then have the option to share with more people or stop sharing altogether.

5. Speed limit warning

Number five of these iPhone tips is for anyone who regularly drives too fast. Speeding is not only dangerous, you also run the risk of being caught. Waze can help you keep all this in check with its built-in speedometer. You can enable this via ‘Settings’ > ‘Speedometer’. In any case, make sure that the ‘Show on map’ option is enabled.

You then have the option to have Waze play a warning sound when you are going too fast. We recommend enabling this and then setting the ‘Show warning’ option to, for example, ‘10% above speed limit’. This way you avoid being constantly warned and you only get a warning if you are really going too fast.

6. Add your music app

We conclude these iPhone tips with how to integrate a music app into Waze. Navigating and controlling your music can be quite difficult while driving. But luckily, Waze can connect to various streaming services, giving you control without having to leave the app.

Just tap the pink music icon at the top right and Waze will show you a list of streaming services it supports. Choose a service from the list and tap Accept when the confirmation screen appears. You can also tap the Settings icon to go to a list of compatible apps with links that take you directly to the App Store.
