Are you going to buy a new iPhone or iPad? In that case you will now see energy labels with iPhones and iPads. This is how Apple’s devices score!
Energy labels in EU
Have you recently looked at a new iPhone or iPad? In that case you may have already noticed that Apple has recently shown energy labels with all iPhones and iPads that the company sells. That is not entirely voluntary, because the European Union has mandatory this since 20 June 2025. With all smartphones with a screen size of 4 to 7-inch and tablets with a 7 to 17.4-inch display, the energy labels have been mandatory since this month.
The energy labels for the iPhones and iPads are known, because we have seen similar labels with electrical appliances such as washing machines and dryers for years. With smartphones and tablets, the European Union requires more information. This way you can see how often the battery can be charged, the water and dust resistance of the device, to what extent the device can stand a fall and how easily the device can be repaired. You can also see the battery life and of course the energy score of the iPhone or iPad.

So (bad) score iPhones and iPads
On Apple’s website, the energy labels have since been added to all iPhones and iPads that the company sells. At the moment you can get the iPhone 15, iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16th, iPhone 16 Pro and the iPhone 16 Pro Max at Apple. All iPhones have Energy score B. The other information such as the battery life and the battery power differ per iPhone and can also be found on the energy labels.
Where the iPhones have energy label B, this is (much) lower with the iPads. Apple is selling the iPad 2025, iPad Air 2025, iPad Pro 2024 and the iPad Mini 2024 at the moment. The latter scores the best of Apple’s tablets with a Energy score E. Have the regular iPad, iPad Air and the iPad Pro Energy label G. That is striking, because this is the least efficient energy class. According to the new energy labels, iPads are not economical at all.

More about the energy labels
To determine the energy class, the European Union looks at the battery life and the capacity of the battery. This shows that the iPads score below par, in contrast to the iPhones. For consumers, the energy labels are in any case good news, because this way you can see which devices are economical and which are not at all. This Apple may give more reason to greatly improve the battery life of future iPhones and iPads.
Incidentally, the energy labels have another advantage, because Apple is now publishing much more information than before. For the first time you see the battery power of the device and the scratch resistance of the screen. Comparing different smartphones and tablets becomes much easier in this way. Curious about the energy labels? On Apple’s website you will find them with all available iPhones and iPads. Will you soon get a new smartphone or tablet? Then you will also get the energy label printed in the box.
