Is this a cockroach?

Answer

Dear Eve,

this is indeed a cockroach. Cockroaches are characterized by long antennae, long thorny legs and 2 cerci (protrusions) at the back of the body. In the photo all morphological features are not clearly visible, but to me this does not appear to be an adult specimen, but rather a wingless nymph.

Cockroaches are often light shy, and not always easy to detect in the home. If you want to determine (or catch) the presence of other specimens, you can always use a kind of bait trap (cockroach trap). The cockroach trap is a glue board, provided with an attractant. The company Edialux has a number of products for private use that can be purchased in larger garden stores (such as Aveve); see https://www.edialux.be/products/Weringen-en-vallen/insectenvallen/Kakkerrokenval.

kind regards,

Hans
