In old McLaren F1 car
Not only Max Verstappen, but also father Jos Verstappen will be in action next week in Austria. Verstappen senior gets behind the wheel of a classic McLaren racing car.
Undoubtedly Jos Verstappen will sometimes itch when he sees son Max busy in Formula 1. For the now 51-year-old former F1 driver, it has been almost twenty years since he last took action in Formula 1. Next race weekend he can get a taste of it again, although he will go a lot further back in time than 2003 and drive a CanAm race car.
Verstappen is participating in the Legends Parade in Austria, in which various veterans from the racing world make their appearance. Jos Verstappen has the honor of maneuvering a 1972 McLaren M8F around the Red Bull Ring. So a car from his year of birth.
Other former Formula 1 drivers will also be present, including David Coulthard (who drives a McLaren M6B), Juan Pablo Montoya (McLaren M8F), Mark Webber (Lola ‘1165’) and Alexander Wurz (McLaren M8C). What is special is that Red Bull CEO Dr. Helmut Marko rides along. The 80-year-old drives a 1970 BRM. Marko himself was particularly successful as a driver in endurance racing in the 1970s, winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1970 and 1971. The Austrian was also a promising F1 driver, but a fatal incident in the 1972 French Grand Prix in which he lost an eye forced his active career to end.
