Junk messages on Discord? This is how you prevent that

Discord servers are often pleasant places to hang out. You meet and talk to people who share the same interests, so that the chat environment can be an enrichment of your life. But sometimes you come across people there who exhibit irritating or annoying behavior. This prevents you from being harassed on the chat service.

Although Discord is a great service to get in touch with people, whether you know them or not, it does have a major drawback: your DMs (direct messages) are automatically set as public. This means that anyone within the server can send you private messages, whether you like it or not.

For example, to keep out bots or difficult people, you must ensure that your DMs are protected, so that not everyone just sends a message.

Ban Discord Messages

Fortunately, adjusting this setting is quite simple and can be done with a few clicks. We explain it in the step-by-step plan below, so that you will be left alone in no time.

  • Open Discord’s Settings
  • Now go to the options for you Privacy and security
  • On the opened page, now look for the default options for your server privacy
  • Then you turn the switch here behind Allow private messages from server members

From this point on, when you enter a server, not everyone can just send you a message. You can immediately arrange this for all servers, but you can also indicate per server whether you want to receive messages from strangers or not. We can imagine that you would like to have that with some servers, so that’s why it’s nice that this option is available.

If you want to arrange this at the server level, then proceed as follows.

  • Right click on a server on the right side of the screen
  • Select now Privacy settings (almost at the bottom)
  • Slide the slider to the left if you don’t want everyone to message you

Hopefully this will remove a major source of irritation while using Discord. Especially when you share large servers from game communities or Twitch streamers, you have no idea in advance who you will be dealing with.

Do you want to present a different name per server? That’s also possible, we discussed earlier how to change the Discord nickname works.
