In the first construction phase of the Upper Germanic Limes, the watchtowers and then a wooden palisade were built in a cleared forest aisle. The digital reconstruction shows the situation near present-day Osterburken (Neckar-Odenwald district) around the year 160.

The fortified Roman land border between the Rhine and the Danube is now simply called the Limes. The complex must have been a spectacular building in the 2nd and 3rd centuries with around 900 watchtowers and 120 forts.
