Kia Stonic – Back to Basics

Kia Stonic – Back to Basics

The Kia Stonic is after the Picanto and the Rio the most accessible model of the Koreans. It has been on the market since 2017 and the B-segment crossover received a mild facelift at the end of 2020. The Stonic has never been featured in this section before, so it’s high time to dive into the configurator. How much value for money do you get at the base price?

Kia Stonic ComfortLine 1.0 T-GDI MHEV (100 hp)

€ 21,795

Today, compact crossovers cannot be dragged around. There are now countless models on the market in the well-fought segment and Kia has been around for a while with the Stonic. Not entirely without merit, because at that time a total of 7,194 copies left the showroom in the Netherlands. With the facelift at the end of 2020, the external adjustments remained limited, with new headlights, fresh paint colors and other alloy wheels. Under the hood were new 1.0 T-GDI engines with mild hybrid technology to lie. That power source is available with 100 hp or 120 hp, in this section we will of course take the former.

With the version with 100 hp, you are always tied to a manual six-speed gearbox. The seven-speed DCT automatic transmission is only available in combination with the more powerful variant. There are more options in terms of equipment levels. It is standard available as ComfortLine, above that are the DynamicLine, DynamicPlusLine, GT-Line and GT-PlusLine. The difference between the cheapest and most expensive variant is € 6,000. With the 120 hp 1.0 T-GDI, the DynamicLine is also the entry level.

Invisible facelift

Those new LED headlights of the facelifted Stonic are not present on the ComfortLine. For that you have to dig deeper into the pouch, because they are only on it from the GT PlusLine. What the ComfortLine does have is LED daytime running lights with halogen projection headlights. Static cornering lights and front fog lights are also included. Furthermore, the Stonic has black plastic panels all around at the bottom of the doors, the bumpers and the fender edges. As standard, the Stonic continues on 15-inch steel wheels with hubcaps, but the configurator instead shows the 15-inch light-alloy wheels of the DynamicLine. The entry-level wheels can be seen in the last photo of this article. The light-alloy wheels are not available ex-factory as an option on the ComfortLine.

The Stonic is available with a range of colors, of which the depicted Clear White is the standard color. The other seven paint colors have an additional cost of € 595. If you prefer even more diversity in color, you can order two-tone paint for an additional € 395 extra. Furthermore, the Stonic is standard equipped with central door locking with remote control and a light sensor. High-beam assistance is also standard equipment. The side mirrors are electrically adjustable and heated.

Basic needs

Inside the Stonic, the upholstery consists of black fabric with white stitching, there are no other options. The trim part in the dashboard is painted silver to create a bit of jeu. Where the exterior can be flavored with multiple color combinations, that kite does not apply to the interior. The steering wheel and gear knob are made of plastic, the driver’s seat is adjustable in height as standard and the steering wheel can be adjusted in height and depth. The front side windows are electrically operated, but the rear passengers will have to swing to open their windows.

In this segment, a standard touchscreen for multimedia is not always an issue. However, Kia always supplies an 8-inch touchscreen with DAB +, Bluetooth connectivity and a preparation for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in the Stonic. Integrated navigation is not available on the ComfortLine. Between the counters is a 4.2-inch screen for the driving data. Air conditioning is also available as standard, with which the Stonic at least has a number of things that we nowadays consider as more or less essential in a new car.

In terms of safety systems, the Stonic is always equipped with autonomous emergency braking assistance, active lane assistance and fatigue detection. Cruise control is not standard, however, you will have to look to the DynamicLine for that. Individual options are not available on the Stonic, but you can choose from various accessories such as roof racks and stainless steel running boards. In the trim levels, the DynamicLine is equipped with the aforementioned things and rear parking sensors, a reversing camera and a leather-covered steering wheel and gear knob. The DynamicPlusLine adds, among other things, navigation, climate control, electrically folding exterior mirrors and LED rear lights. With the GT-Line, Kia pours a sporty sauce on the Stonic with other bumpers, interior trim and aluminum pedals. Steering and steering wheel heating are also included. Top version GT PlusLine adds LED headlights, a sliding / tilting roof and blind spot detection.
