KPMG warns for electric black Saturday

With the spring break at your doorstep, the winter sporting Netherlands travels back to the snowy peaks of countries such as Switzerland and Austria. With more electric cars on the road, more people logically go to the holiday destination with their EV. And that can sometimes become problematic, according to KPMG.

KPMG expects that on Saturday 22 February most people will travel to their winter sports destination. According to the company, Austria is by far the most popular destination among electric car owners. It is expected that 3 percent of the Dutch electric fleet will go the 22nd towards the Austrian snow. That suit him bit 1,500 EVs with a minimum radius of action of 300 km of the Dutch total (56,500 cars).

These drivers travel via the German motorways and therefore use fast charging stations to continue their journey. KPMG warns of an “electric black Saturday”. “Waiting times can be up to 75 minutes per car. Moreover, it is quite possible that the expected peak on Saturday will ensure that the actual load capacity per car is considerably lower, because all stations are fully occupied. ” This would mean that drivers also have to stop more often at a charging station.

While, according to the company, the Dutch infrastructure is not growing fast enough with the demand for charging points, Germany is even less prepared for such crowds. On the route between the Netherlands and Germany there are a total of 450 Tesla Superchargers and Ionity has 1,500 loading places on offer. KPMG advises travelers to ensure that they do not have to top up in Southern Germany on Saturday 22 February between 12.00 and 16.00. “Traveling on Friday or Sunday seems a much better plan.”
