Lamborghini CEO Domenicali becomes Formula 1 CEO

It has been rumored for several days, but now Lamborghini comes with the confirmation: Stefano Domenicali is leaving as CEO. The Italian will be the new top man of Formula 1.

Domenicali (55) made a career at Ferrari from the early 90s. There he switched positions in 2008 by moving to the brand’s Formula 1 team as top executive of the sports department. Domenicali took over from the very successful team boss Jean Todt. Under Domenicali, Ferrari only managed to achieve some successes at the beginning of his era as team boss, but after that it quickly deteriorated. When he was dismissed as team principal in 2014 after a difficult period for Ferrari, he joined Audi, returning him to the passenger car industry. Volkswagen, after all, the parent company of Lamborghini, then placed him at the head of Lamborghini in 2016, where he will leave after this year. Under his leadership, Lamborghini came up with the Urus, among other things, and the brand saw sales figures rise to unprecedented heights.

The Imola-born CEO returns to Formula 1 after a six-year absence. There he takes over from Chase Carey, the current CEO of Formula One Management. Domenicali thus gets the reins of Formula 1. There he will meet two old acquaintances in other senior positions: Jean Todt as president of the FIA and Ross Brawn as the sporting director of F1. Domenicali worked with Brawn during his time as team principal at Scuderia Ferrari.
