Laptop plug is in, but the laptop won’t charge… Now what?

Perhaps a recognizable situation: you are at work and your laptop suddenly complains about an energy shortage. But the plug was there, right? You look at your taskbar and see that the battery is not charging. What’s going on? And how can you solve this?

The most obvious solution is of course to check the laptop plug first. Does it fit well in the laptop? Is the plug properly inserted into the socket? And is the cable properly inserted into the adapter? Just to be sure, check another outlet before taking any further action if it turns out that there is nothing wrong with the cable. Or grab another charging cable. Are you using the correct cable? And if your laptop or convertible works with a USB-C charger, are you using the correct connection on the device? Make sure that the (supplied) USB-C cable is always in the socket with the icon of a plug next to it.

Check the laptop’s hardware

Once you’ve completed the general steps, it’s time to take it a step further. What is the status of the battery? Switch off your laptop, remove the power cable and then remove the battery from your laptop. Then press the power button for about fifteen seconds, so that any power residues are completely gone.

Now put the plug in the socket (keep the battery separate for a while) and check whether the laptop then turns on. Does your laptop turn on? Then the problem is not with the cable, but with the battery. You can now reinstall the battery and see if it works again; maybe the battery wasn’t quite right. But if that doesn’t fix the problem, then you need to replace the battery.

Another tip is to check the quality of the plug. Are there any kinks in the cable? Could the cable be broken internally? Those things can happen when a vacuum cleaner goes over it, when pets mistake those cables for toys, or when you just use it every day.

Immediately give the power adapter a look. Is it discolored? Is there a part larger than normal? Or maybe you smell burnt plastic? Then chances are that’s where your problem lies. Then you need a new adapter, which is best obtained from the manufacturer. It is also a good idea to check the connection on your laptop. Make sure there is no dust in it and check that the connection itself is not very loose. The contact point must be seated properly and firmly.

Other tips

Always make sure that the laptop has enough space to dissipate its heat. When a battery gets very hot, its performance deteriorates. The laptop may therefore think that the battery is fully charged or absent. What you can do is turn off the laptop and give it time to cool down. In the meantime, clean and dust the ventilation openings and only switch it on again when the laptop is no longer warm.

Finally, it is a good idea to check the settings of your battery, so that you are fully aware of what your laptop does when there is little energy available. And run the drivers and check if there is an update. on Windows do you go to Device Manager (open the start menu and type in that word). Locate your battery’s drivers and check for updates by right-clicking on the appropriate hardware. If that doesn’t solve the problem, contact the laptop manufacturer.
