‘Last year 22 percent less commuting than before corona’

The Dutch also traveled much less to and from work last year than before the outbreak of the corona pandemic. This is evident from figures from Statistics Netherlands.

For most of 2022, corona restrictions no longer applied to working in the office. Nevertheless, the number of passenger kilometers traveled for work was 22 percent lower than in 2019, reports the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS).

In particular, the Dutch commuted much less by train than in the last year before the pandemic. According to the statistics office, the number of kilometers traveled by train for commuter traffic was half as low as in 2019. People in the Netherlands traveled 39 percent fewer kilometers by bus, tram or metro than before the global virus outbreak.

Compared to 2021, people in the Netherlands traveled much more often to and from work last year. Commuters traveled a total of 44.3 billion kilometers, 22 percent more than a year earlier. The car was by far the favorite last year and accounted for almost 70 percent of the commuting kilometers.

For the time being, it seems that 2023 will be a different year. In the first half of the year, traffic congestion was already 15 percent higher than in 2019. The ANWB now hardly sees any effect of working from home or traveling outside rush hours on traffic jams.
